Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation 6247 Indian Lane Kettle & Stony Point FN, Ontario, Canada N0N 1J1 EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – Hillside School Principal POSITION SUMMARY: The Hillside School Principal is responsible for providing educational leadership within the community, and for administering the Hillside School programs in accordance with Council and the Education Committee directives and policies, and for bringing about measurable improvement in the quality and standards of education provided for the community families and students, including cultural and language programs focused on a planned strategy for maintaining the language, culture and history of our Anishinaabe ancestors. REPORTING PROTCOL: The Hillside School Principal will report directly to the Education Manager PRIMARY DUTIES: Function as an educational leader in the school, and in consultation with the Education Manager, adapting and developing curriculum with a view to making the school program responsive to community needs and the Ojibway culture. Oversee and direct the education curriculum and programs of the First Nation consistent with the values of the community, maintaining direct contact with teachers and resources, and keeping the Education Manager current and up to date on all aspects on a regular basis. Responsible for the registration of pupils annually, and the maintenance of accurate attendance records for all students enrolled in Hillside School, reporting any areas of concern to the Education Manager. Oversee and direct the teaching staff and resources of the Hillside School, ensuring the stability, efficiency and effectiveness of the First Nation’s education teaching and curriculum resources; as well as ensuring development plans are in place and staff training needs are identified and addressed. SECONDARY DUTIES: Ensure processes are in place and maintained to ensure the health, comfort, safety and well-being of all students; the care of all teaching materials; and to attend to and report and/or rectify problems promptly and effectively. Promote and maintain close cooperation with the community, parents, elders and others to ensure the school is an effective and functioning community resource. Ensure Professional Activity Days meet the needs of the academic staff. Other duties as assigned EDUCATION / SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate Degree plus either an additional relevant Master’s Degree, or First Nation Principal Certification Current membership in the Ontario College of Teachers; Certification to teach in three or more divisions, including the intermediate division; Evidence of at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience in an elementary or secondary school; Familiarity with AANDC and other funding sources for Education programs; Appreciation and understanding of the First Nation history, language, culture and goals of the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. Able to serve as a positive role model for students; Valid Driver’s License Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and data collection. Able to work under pressure, meet deadlines and maintain strict confidentiality. Able to encourage open communication and interaction with the staff and community. Experience working with difficult people. Task-oriented work style that requires minimal direction.
