Transportation: Bus will leave WHS at 7:15am for transportation to TSSCC Bus will leave TSSCC at 1:50pm for transportation to WHS It is the sole responsibility of the student to be on the bus each morning for transportation to TSSCC. Any student who misses the bus from WHS to TSSCC will be considered tardy. Attendance Policy: Morning Meeting begins promptly at 7:30am. Any student not prepared to begin at 7:30am will be considered tardy. The first three (3) tardies will result in a verbal warning All subsequent tardies will result in a detention, served with Mrs. Dean On the seventh (7th) tardy, Dean Herlihly will be notified Lunch: All students in The Learning Academy will take 1st lunch at WHS. Lunch is from 10:59 – 11:24. Bus will leave TSSCC at 10:55am for transportation to WHS Bus will leave WHS at 11:30 for transportation to TSSCC It is the sole responsibility of the student to be on the bus from WHS to TSSCC. Any student who misses the bus from WHS to TSSCC will be considered ‘missing’ and protocols will follow. Mrs. Dean will address discipline on an individual basis. Afterschool: Students are welcome to stay afterschool Monday-Wednesday, until 3:00pm. Students must get approval from a teacher, prior to staying after. Students staying after are expected to continue working respectfully. Behavior & Classroom Expectations Tower Street School Community Center: It is expected that all students, while at The Learning Academy, will conduct themselves in a respectful, responsible, and appropriate manner. Tower Street School is a Community Center open to the public, for a wide range of programs servicing multiple ages. Cellphones, iPods & other electronic devices As stated in the WHS Handbook, “A student may possess an electronic communication device (ECD) (including but not limited to cellular phones) in school provided that during school hours the device remains silent/turned off.” Furthermore, it is a requirement of The Learning Academy, that all electronic devices be stored in the assigned student’s locker. Additionally, as stated in the WHS Handbook, “The only exceptions to this policy are when a teacher asks students to use electronic communication devices for instructional purposes and/or are given permission in a supervised common area.” Violations of this policy will remain the same, as stated in the WHS Handbook, “Violations of this policy will result in confiscation of the cellular telephone or electronic communication device and disciplinary action. If the item is confiscated it will be released/returned to the student's parent/guardian after the student complies with any disciplinary action that is imposed.” Food & Drinks Food and drinks, including water, are prohibited in the learning areas of The Learning Academy, and are only allowed in the designated area. Students may access food and drinks prior to 7:30am, during lunch, and after 1:45pm. Additional times may be granted as warranted. Absolutely no food and/or drinks may be delivered to The Learning Academy. If a student forgot his/her lunch, it may be brought to the Attendance Office at WHS in the Ward Building. Lockers Individual lockers will be assigned for the storage of all personal items. The following items will not be allowed in the learning space, but are not limited to: coats/jackets, blankets, bathrobes, pillows, cellphones and/or other electronic devices, purses, backpacks, totes, etc. It is suggested that each student has his/her own combination lock. If a student chooses to put a lock on his/her locker, the combination must be given to Mrs. Dean. Students are prohibited from accessing another student’s locker, other than his/her own. Students will be allowed to use his/her locker prior to 7:30am, during lunch, and after 1:45pm. Additional times may be granted as needed. Bathroom & Breaks If any student must leave The Learning Academy to use the restroom, he/she must sign out. Breaks will be determined by teachers when warranted. Visitors Any visitor to The Learning Academy must be pre-approved by Mrs. Dean. Mrs. Dean will determine length of stay, so as not to interfere with the learning. Behavior & Classroom Expectations Course Materials: Pens/Pencils Highlighters/Markers/Sharpies Sticky Notes 2 packages of dividers Thumb Drive (optional) Wireless Mouse (optional) Combination Lock (optional) 1 Three-Ring Binder PBL will blend all content course work Materials for projects will be assessed and provided as needed For all of the following academic descriptions, more information will be provided throughout the year. Student Portfolio: Each student will be given a binder for his/her Learning Academy Portfolio. This portfolio is to remain within The Learning Academy at all times. PBGR’s, rubrics, and various documents will be placed within the portfolio. PBL: Learning will primarily be done through a series of modules, focusing on Problem-Based Learning and Project-Based Learning. These modules will encompass all subject areas, and through PBGR’s students will showcase proficiency. Reading: Each student is expected to read 9-15 books each year within The Learning Academy. A minimum of nine (9) of the books will be read independently, and evidence of completion must be submitted by each due date as stated separately. The Milady Cosmetology book will be counted as 1 book at the end of the academic year. The team may read 2-4 books together. P.E./Health: As a state requirement, students must fulfill 100 minutes of physical education per week. This will be accomplished through various physical fitness activities and health education. Students MUST have appropriate footwear and clothing when required. Any student not prepared for P.E. will be required to make-up class on date(s) determined by Mrs. Dean. Civics/Senior Project: All seniors will participate in the Senior Exhibition. More information to follow from Mrs. Murphy. As part of The Learning Academy, sophomores and juniors will complete various civics related assignments, tasks, and projects to prepare for senior year. Mid-Term/Final Presentations: Each student will be given a presentation date and time for both midterms and final exams. Students will present his/her PBGR’s to a panel of judges. A parent/guardian is required to attend these presentations. Field Trips & Guest Speakers: Field trips will include college visits, curriculum related points of interest, and experiential learning opportunities. Field trips are designed to enhance curriculum depth. Guest speakers will be invited to join us throughout the year to provide us with personal insights, expertise, and guidance. Internships: All non-cosmetology students will participate in a career readiness module during first quarter, to secure internship placement. Internships will begin no later than the start of second quarter. Interns will be required to submit weekly time-logs and reflections. Interns will also meet weekly to conference with program coordinator about internship. Requirements will also include mini- projects for both semesters. Additional expectations and requirements will vary depending upon internship placement. Grading & Report Cards: All students will receive a progress report and report card during the predetermined dates as stated in the WHS Handbook. All progress reports and report cards from The Learning Academy will be generated by MMS. The Learning Academy is proficiency based, and thus, all progress reports and report cards will be a progression towards a final proficiency. Final proficiency will be stated on each student’s final report card, which will be issued at the end of the school year. We look forward to an exciting and successful school year!
