PACKING LIST ME TO WE KENYA 2013 GLOBAL EDUCATION & OUTREACH (GEO) While there is some flexibility in the list of required items, most items are not optional, but necessary gear and supplies to bring, required to ensure you have a safe, productive and comfortable experience. Items that are optional are noted as such in brackets (optional). Please consider the cultural and environmental impact of your belongings and weight. Pack lightly! We recommend you travel with modest clothing (things that you could live with losing or getting ‘ruined’/dirty) and biodegradable soaps and shampoos. GEAR & SUPPLIES Passport (+ all travel papers); immunization records/card, especially for yellow fever Parents emergency contact numbers (on paper) and in your phone contacts Large hiking backpack for all your gear, supplies and clothing (no wheelie suitcases please) o Label your luggage (we will also give you 2 trip luggage tags at the airport to use) Daypack Spending money o 100USD for flying doctors insurance and Kenyan visa o 200-300USD for airports/food in airports, airport tax, gifts, snacks, etc. Document and money belt or other “holder” for your important things (don’t worry I will carry your passports) Wallet (optional) Journal & pen/pencil (NOTE: you will be given a Me to We journal) Swahili dictionary (optional) Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries Sunglasses Water bottle Cell phone & charger (optional) Books (optional) Glasses/contacts/contact solution Camera (w/extra batteries/charger/memory card, etc.) Watch/phone/travel clock (so you can meet us on time for meals, activities, etc) Epipen (with carrier) Essential toiletries (some may be optional) o Toothbrush and toothpaste o Extra Epipen o Medications such as Gravol, Advil/Tylenol, Pepto-Bismol, Tums, antihistamines, Benadryl, Imodium, possible prescriptions --malaria pills, cipro, etc. (please provide list to chaperones when you depart) o deodorant o biodegradable shampoo, soap/body wash o hand sanitizers o tissues o feminine hygiene products (NOTE: you will not have very many options in Kenya) GEO: Real learning. Real impact o sunscreen/aloe vera/lip balm o brush o nail clippers o shaving kit (optional) Insect repellent (30% deet) Small First Aid Kit Zip-lock plastic bags, plastic/garbage bags for wet clothes stuff sacks (optional) for sorting clothes and laundry REQUIRED CLOTHING You will be outdoors walking and working hard during your trip, so please ensure you bring clothing that you do not mind getting dirty or potentially ruined. Please do not bring new ‘flashy’ clothing; dress conservatively. It is important that clothes are not too tight or revealing including shorts above the knee, no leggings/Lulu Lemon yoga wear, no tank tops, etc. “Fashionable” or revealing clothing can be insensitive culturally and inappropriate to work in. It can also attract unwanted attention, especially for girls, and can tempt theft.
