for appearances in shows. How
could she make sure her rabbits
were winning rabbits?

3.
4.
What are the different ways animals can be bred?
What features do judges look for in rabbit shows?
Which breeding method should she use? Describe it.
Why should she use this method and not the other
ones?
6 mark question
• What are the similarities and differences
between bird and mammal reproduction?
Break it down
• Look at the sex organs – what are the
main differences?
• What is fertilisation?
• How does it happen in mammals?
• How does it happen in birds?
• How long does it take for the embryo to
develop?
How could we set up an artificial
incubator?
Animal Housing
• All types of housing have features to
provide for the need of the animals.
• Describe how these examples provide for
the needs of the animals
Break it down….
• What are the names of the animal
housing?
• What things are vital to the animal?
• How is this provided for in the housing?
• What problems could occur if these basic
needs are not met?
Model Answer
The hutch provides a home for a rabbit. It has space for the
rabbit to move around freely and also a quiet and warm
place to sleep. A water bottle and food bowl provide vital
food and drink for the rabbit. The rabbit will need fresh
food and water daily and require cleaning once a week.
If the hutch is too small and the rabbit doesn’t get
enough exercise they could develop behavioural
problems. The aviary or bird cage provides a home for a
bird. Again, it has a food and water bowl and a budgie
might like a cuttlefish to provide calcium and jaw
exercise. The cage must be large enough for the bird to
spread it’s wings and a cover should be provided at night
for sleeping. The bird will also need bars for perching.
The food and water will need to be changed on a daily
basis and the cage cleaned weekly. A cage which is too
small for the bird could cause behavioural problems
Diet is important to small animals
Explain the importance of the main nutrients
in a rabbit’s diet (6)
Nutrients can be given to a small animal in
different forms.
Explain the different forms and their benefits
to the animal (6)
Rabbits have an important part of their
digestive system known as the Caecum,
whereas Chickens have the gizzard.
Explain the roles of these parts and why
they are needed by the animals (6)
It is important for the health of a rabbit to be
checked on a weekly basis to avoid any
major health issues.
Explain how a health check is carried out
and it’s importance (6)
It is important to handle, transport and weigh
small animals correctly.
Explain how a small animal can be handled,
transported and weighed and why it is
important for both the animal and owner

A farmer is growing vegetables and many of
his crop seem to be failing.
How can he tell that his crops are failing?
How could he improve the growth of his
vegetables? (6)
Bullet points
• Unhealthy plant; Wilting – under or over
watering
• pest damage – aphids and slugs
• poor growth – lack of nutrients
• Improve growing medium
• Control humidity, temperature, light, water
An organic farm may use biological pest
control, whereas an intensive farm may
use non-biological methods.
Discuss advantages and disadvantages for
using these different methods (6)
Bullet points
• Biological – use of a predator to eat the
pest
• Advantage – no use of pesticides, no run
off into water sources
• Disadvantage – can change the balance of
the ecosystem
• Non-biological – use of pesticides
• Adv – effective way to increase crop yield
• Disadv – can run off and pollute water
sources
A farmer may choose to use organic or
inorganic fertiliser.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages
of each. (6)
Bullet Points
• Organic fertiliser – manure
• Adv - Adds humus, improves crumb
structure
• Disadv – unknown nutrient composition
• Inorganic – man made
• Adv – easy to spread and releases known
nutrients quickly
• Disadv – expensive, not organic method
Discuss adaptations of a flower for wind and
insect pollination (6)
Explain how selective breeding could be
used to a new variety of tomato plant (6)
Discuss the differences between bulbs,
runners and rhizomes used in plant
cultivation (6)
Explain the different ways that soil can be
cultivated and the importance of soil
cultivation to plant growth (6)
Discuss the problems associated with
storing crops and ways that storage life
can be lengthened (6)
A red rose is crossed with a white rose and
all of the F1 generation are red. Show
using a genetic cross diagram, the
phenotype and genotype of the parents
and offspring and the chances of
producing different coloured roses (6)
