Dear Donor,
Former top 20 ranked WTA player, Mariaan de Swardt, and Abrie du Plooy have decided to help the children in
struggling/disadvantageous areas in South Africa. The goal is to give a boost to kids in the Mpumalanga area that
participate in tennis ages 5-18 to enable them to get more exposure. We will choose an area each year and follow up on
the progression of the specific area and children. We trained and participated in tournaments in this area in the 80's and
90's when tennis was thriving with 300-400 kids that entered in the tournaments. Recently, due to the weak currency and
other factors, the entry has declined to a merely 60 kids per tournament. We feel that this area gave us the avenue to play
pro and college in the later stage of our careers and want the same opportunities for the kids.
The goal is to use the donations to:





Hosting top level junior tournaments in the Mpumalanga area to give the kids in the area exposure to better
competition
Give scholarships to the most talented players to the US to train for a month and all expenses paid- 1 boy and 1
girl
We already have Tom Slabbert from that area that will attend a Nike Camp for 3 weeks this summer and all his
expenses will be paid. He was selected by local Coach Charl Basson
Conducting 1 camp per year in the struggling area for all tennis players. The funding will be used to pay for court
rental, equipment, food, promo materials and payment to local coaches.
Each participating kid will receive a t-shirt with the donors name on it, can of balls, a daily diary for tennis and a
tennis goody bag
