Rules
1. Winning chefs will be invited to appear on UVM
Extension’s “Across the Fence” seen on WCAX-TV
Mon. through Fri. at 12:10 pm.
2. Bring all entries to the Culinary Dept. in the Ware
Building, behind administrative offices at the back
of the building.
3. Entries for the first show will be accepted on Saturday,
Aug. 26th from 10:00 am until four. Judging will start
at 4:30 pm. Entries are to be delivered on disposable
plates. (The entries for these contests are listed under
Baked Goods.)
4. Recipes must be included for all contests.
5. “Five Ingredients” - Entries accepted Sunday, Aug. 27th
from 10:00am to 4:00 pm. Judging will be in the Ware
Building at 4:30 pm.
6. Best Whoopie Pie using King Arthur Flour from
Norwich, Vermont. Entries accepted Monsday,
Aug. 28th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Ware
Building. Judging at 4:30 pm.
7. Salsa Contest - Entries accepted from 10:00 am to
4:00 pm on Tuesday August 29th in the Ware Building.
Judging at 4:30pm
8. The fifth annual Tim Shea Apple Pie Contest entries
accepted from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm on Wednesday,
Aug. 30th in the Ware Building. Judging at 4:00 pm.
9. The ninth Annual Chili Contest - Entries accepted
Thursday Aug. 31st, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Judging
will be in the Ware building at 4:.30 pm.
10.Entries for the second show will be accepted on
Friday, Sept. 1st from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Judging
will start at 4:30 pm. Entries are to be delivered on
disposable plates. (The entries for these contests are
listed under Baked Goods.)
11.The King Arthur Flour Best Brownie contest for
Juniors only. Entries accepted on Saturday Sept. 2nd
from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Judging will be at 4:30 pm
in the Ware Building

12.Ugly Cake Decorating Contest - Sunday, Sept. 3rd,
participants arrive at 2:00 pm. Judging at 2:30 pm in
the Ware Building
13.All food entries become the property of the
Champlain Valley Exposition.
14.All entries must conform to the standards of the
department. No prize will be awarded to entries
judged unworthy.
15.All entries entered will be grouped and classified.
16.Only one entry per category.
17.Please pick up prize ribbons and vouchers no later
than 5:00 pm.
18.All plates, dishes, etc. not picked up will become the
property of the Champlain Valley Fair after Sunday,
September 3rd.
19.No prizes will be mailed.

Bring entries on Saturday, September 2nd from 10:00 am
to 4:00 pm.
Entrants must be between the ages of 6 and 16. Bring in
six of your best brownies using King Arthur flour. Recipes
must be included. Exhibitor must bring in the opened bag
of King Arthur flour or submit a UPC label from the flour
bag when submitting your entry. Judging will be at 4:30.

Bring three of your best Whoopee Pies using King Arthur
flour. Exhibitors must bring in the opened bag of flour or
submit a UPC label from the flour bag when submitting
your entry. Recipes must be included.
Judging will be at 4:30.

The Fifth Annual Tim Shea Apple Pie Contest
Bring entries on Wed., Aug. 30th from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Tim Shea, Executive Director of the Champlain Valley
Exposition, is partial to apple pie. In his honor, we invite
you to make your best traditional apple pie and he will
help select the first prize entry in this year’s competition.
The lucky winner will receive a rosette and $35. Second
and third place receive a rosette. Judging will be at 4:00 in
the Ware Building. Recipes must be included.
“Five Ingredients” Contest
Bring entries on Sunday, August 27th from 10:00 am to
4:00 pm.
Judging will be at 4:30 pm.
Great tasting recipes don’t have to have a lot of
ingredients! We challenge you to create an entree with five
ingredients. Every dish must have five main ingredients,
with the exception of staples like water, salt, pepper, or oil.
Recipes must be included.
First Place - $35 and a rosette
Second and Third Place - a rosette.
Ugly cake decorating contest
Two Junior Competitions – Ages 5-10 & 11-16
Bring entries in on Sunday Sept. 3rd, by 2:00 pm;
Judging is at 2:30 pm
Please be in the Ware building no later than 2:00 pm
Have fun. Entries judged on looks only. Cakes should be
decorated as ugly as can be - the uglier the better (but
must be in good taste for family viewing). Cakes and
decorations need to be edible. Cakes will be decorated
on site. Children must bring their own utensils and
decorations (and icing if desired). A standard size angel
food cake will be provided. The contest will allow children
15 minutes to make their cake (the ugliest cake in good
taste) they can possibly create.

The Ninth Annual Chili Contest
Bring entries on Thursday, Aug. 31st from 10:00 am to
4:00 pm. Judging will be at 4:30 pm
Open to all ages. Participants must submit one quart of
prepared chili for judging. The chili will be judged in
two categories: Meat or Vegetarian. The chili must be
submitted in a microwaveable container. Please label your
container on the bottom. Recipes must be included.
First Place - $35 and a rosette
Second and Third Place - a rosette
Best Salsa Contest
Bring entries in on Tuesday August 29th from 10:00 am to
4:00 pm. Judging at 4:30 pm.
Bring one pint (16oz) of your best salsa. Hot or mild,
your choice, we will supply the chips. The salsa will be
judged on taste, appearance and aroma. Recipes must be
included.
First Place - $35.00 and a rosette

Prize vouchers will be ready for pick-up the following day before 5:00 pm. All Ribbons and vouchers are to be picked up by
the end of the Fair, Sunday, Sept. 3rd by 5:00 pm. As an exhibitor at the Champlain Valley Exposition (Fair), the exhibitor
agrees that he/she shall be liable and responsible for any harm or damage caused by his/her exhibit including but not
necessarily limited to such damage as may be caused by livestock, horses, 4-H., fruits and vegetables, home crafts, and
foods. The exhibitor will hold harmless the Champlain Valley Exposition for any claims made against it and will indemnify
the Champlain Valley Exposition for and all damages or costs that may be incurred as a result of any such claim. Exhibitor
agrees to abide by the rules & regulations printed in the 2017 Exhibitor Handbook. Any prizes not picked up become
property of the Champlain Valley Fair.
