Prior knowledge: Have some dramatic activities in
Chinese lessons
• Classroom setting: U-shaped
• Teaching & learning objectives:
a. Learn how to express themselves through acting
and body movement
b. Learn how to communicate and co-operate with
each other
c. Develop the creativity and imagination
Storybook: The King’s Cake
Warm-up activity
• First round, teacher shakes the hand bell and the
students walk around in the center of the classroom.
Each student has to pair up with a boy or a girl and
shake hands when the teacher stops shaking the hand
bell.
• Second round, teacher shakes the hand bell. The
students walk around in the center of the classroom and
do the posture of prince or princess while they are
saying hello to each other.
*Students listen to the rhythm of the hand bell and adjust the walking speed.*

Motivation – Teacher in role
• Teacher role-plays Queen Eliza of Smart Country and
the students are the ministers.
• Queen Eliza’s brother is King Paul of Silly Country.
Queen Eliza has not seen her brother for more than
10 years.
• One day, she receives a letter and a photo from his
brother. However, the photo is not clear. The
ministers are asked to help Queen Eliza to identify
the family members of King Paul. (Appendix 1)
Resources: A white collar, a letter with an envelope and a photo
Time: 5 minutes
Motivation – Character Profile
• Students work in groups of eight (total 4 groups).
Each group gets a character profile worksheet
including the King, the Queen, the Cook and the
Gardener.
• Each group discusses and writes about the character,
appearance, hobby and clothes & accessory of the
characters. Then, each group sends a representative
to present what has been discussed. (Appendix 2)

Time: 10 minutes
Play making – Teacher in role
• Teacher role-plays Queen Eliza of Smart Country
and the students are the ministers. They join King
Paul’s birthday party together (All students stand up
and walk around. Then they have to go back to the
seats when they hear the music stops).
• Queen Eliza tells the ministers what she sees in the
party (Teacher reads aloud the story p.1-p.10 except
the ending of it).
• Queen Eliza asks the ministers to solve the problem
which is the ending of the story – how to blow the
candles out.
Resources: A music CD and a story E-book
Time: 5 minutes
Play making –
Still image & Thought tracking
• Students work in groups of eight (total 4 groups).
They have to do a still image of the ending of the
story (the King, the Queen, the Cook and the
Gardener must be included).
• Teacher asks the students what they can see in each
group (It’s not necessary to do it for each group).
Then the teacher asks each group to do the actions.
• Teacher does the thought tracking of each character
in the group.
Time: 15 minutes
Extension – Hot seating
• Students brainstorm and write the questions on a
worksheet. (Appendix 3)
• Teacher scans the questions and invites one of the
Kings, the Queens, the Cooks and the Gardeners to
sit in front of the class one by one.
• The rest of the class asks him/her the questions
respectively about the birthday party or the ending
of the story.

Time: 15 minutes
Extension – Teacher in role
• Teacher role-plays Queen Eliza of Smart Country
and the students are the ministers.
• Queen Eliza thanks the ministers for helping her
brother King Paul to solve the problem. Queen Eliza
goes back to her palace with the ministers (All
students stand up and walk around. They have to go
back to the seats when they hear the music stops.
Or all students close the eyes and think of taking a
rest).

Extension – Write a diary
• Students choose a character (the King, the Queen,
the Cook or the Gardener) and write a diary for him
or her. (Appendix 4)
