After this the ESTRO HT group was proposed for creating a joint platform covering the different aspects of heavy ion therapy for the different projects in Europe which should lead to a closer European cooperation….. • ESTRO HT Group met on the occasion of Med AUSTRON international advisory board meeting in in 2001. Jean-Pierre Gerard was the President of ESTRO & Germaine Heeren (ESTRO) was the key in catalysing this group 13/06/2013 3 ENLIGHT Network The ENLIGHT Network: Was launched in February 2002 @ CERN It was funded by the European Commission between 2002 - 2005 Composed of: Centres in Heidelberg, Lyon, and Pavia CERN, EORTC, ESTRO, GSI, Karolinska, MedAustron, TERA 13/06/2013 4 First ENLIGHT Meeting @ CERN (Feb 2002) Organization: Hans Hoffmann, Ugo Amaldi and Manjit Dosanjh DG Luciano Maiani 5 PIMMS legacy PIMMS 2000 (coordinated by CERN) has led to: Treatment centre in Pavia, Italy. Treatment centre in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, CNAO Facility 7 7 MedAustron 8 EC funded projects in FP7 Total funding of 24,6 M Euros • Marie Curie Initial Training Network • 12 institutions 2008-2012 • 29 trainees 2010-2014 13/06/2013 • R&D on medical imaging for hadron therapy • 16 institutions • Infrastructures for hadron therapy • 20 institutions 2009-2013(4) • Marie Curie ITN • 12 institutions • 16 trainees 2011-2015 Manjit Dosanjh – Zuppinger-Symposium 20139 PARTNER – a success story • Particle Training Network for European Hadrontherapy • 10 academic institutes, research centres, 2 leading companies • 29 young researchers Outcome : • Now working around the World • Open access PARTNER-JRR News from the project • Selected as a flagship project for Marie Curie Actions for the promotion of H2020, as a socalled “gold projects”. • 37 projects in total from FP7 have been selected by RTD and ENTERVISION is the only project representing the Marie Curie Actions. News from the projects • EC have selected the ENVISION and ULICE summaries to draft a "Result in Brief", a short text written in a language more easily understandable by a broader public. • The text will be made available by the EC in 5 languages (English, French, German, Spanish and Italian). The Road Ahead…. …. what next ? Road ahead: actions needed … • HORIZON 2020 starts in 2014 • Reduced funding + lower level EC support = ENLIGHT community needs to work hard • Need agreed strategy for R&D and lobbying for common goal • • • • Strengthen and enlarge network Improve visibility : ENLIGHT-Highlights started in 2012 Increase support: COST (passed preliminary selection) Find ways of increasing support: financial/political (not only Horizon 2020, also ESF, ERC, others?)
