Scott Marriott Memorial
Scholarship
Coach Scott Marriott Memorial Scholarship
Coach Scott Marriott came to Lafayette High School in 1976 with a well-known
reputation of taking over a football program that was "down on its luck" rebuilding them
to become winners on and off the field. He had done that at his other three coaching
homes, Westboro, MO, Oregon, MO and Maryville, MO, all of whom had 0-10 or 0-11
seasons the year before he arrived. These programs became solid winning programs
under his leadership and LHS was no exception...the two years prior to Coach Marriott
coming to Lafayette, the Irish were 0-10 and 0-11. Coach Marriott's brand of football
was simple,hard-hitting, make no mistakes. His players executed all phases of the game
to perfection. In the first season with a nucleus of hungry, talented athletes, Coach
Marriott and the Fighting Irish won the first game of the season against Kansas City
Northeast 6-0 when Freshman QB John Lisenbee came in for the injured senior Terry
Landess. The excitement of winning for the Fighting Irish had just begun - football pride
and a winning tradition came back to the North Side. The Irish in the next twelve years
won four city championships, two Jamborees (discontinued for a few years during this
time) three MEC conference championships, six district championships, three
quarterfinal games and appeared in a semifinal game that would have found them in
State Championship, had it not been for the Lakers of Camdenton on that gray, windy
day when they lost 3-0 in the fourth quarter. The teams took great pride in the Irish
"home field" advantage and enjoyed a streak of 17 victories without a loss on the field
now named in his honor. No other St. Joseph teams have enjoyed such success. Coach
Marriott and his staff proudly coached many all state, district, conference and city
players through those years, including his son QB and defensive back, Colby. Coach
Marriott accepted a newly created position as Activities Coordinator at LHS upon
graduation of his son where he served ten years before his retirement in 1998. Coach
Marriott was inducted into the Missouri High School Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
Coach Marriott instilled in his players a great work ethic, a respect for teammates, as
well as opponents and the importance of being a good citizen both on and off the field.
This scholarship has been established by family and friends to recognize his
commitment to education and the game of football. Coach Marriott enjoyed
hearing from players later in life and was proud of their successful careers, great
families and the role that Irish football played in their life.
