PP LESSONS TERM 3, 2016 LESSON 10, WEEK 10 Last week we looked at: How our thoughts about things can make us feel happy or sad. We need to be aware of our unhelpful thoughts and learn to change them to helpful thoughts. This Week WALT: understand that helpful thinking makes us feel better WILF: recognising different types of thoughts and choose more helpful thoughts Linking thoughts and feelings If we use helpful thoughts (Optimistic thoughts) we will have happier feelings and feel better. If we use unhelpful thoughts (Pessimistic thoughts) we can feel unhappy This week - 3 ways of thinking: We are revising: Ways we think about things – 1. Permanent (always) or temporary (will end) Ways we think about things – 2. Everything (all things) or specific (one thing) Ways we think about things – 3. Because of me (it is all my fault, I am the cause of the problem) or Because of others (it’s not all because of my actions) Brightside (Optimistic) thinking Versus Unhelpful thoughts (Pessimistic) thinking AND ‘Talking to Myself’ (using self talk) to change unhelpful thoughts to more helpful thoughts Ways we think about bad things – 1. Permanent or temporary? Permanent – it will always be like this Temporary – it’s this way now, but it can get better Examples: Julie is not invited to play with a group of girls at lunch time Thoughts: I will always be left out and never play with those girls or I didn’t get invited to play with those particular girls this time but I have lots of other friends and those girls might let me play next time. Ways we think about bad things – 2. Everything or specific ? Everything (global) – this will affect everything Specific – this is only about this thing Examples: Student gets into trouble for copying a child’s work in a test Thoughts: The teachers will think I’m a cheat in every test. or Mrs Brown will be cross with me for a while, but I know that she will forgive me and trust me again. Ways we think about things – 3. Because of me or because of others? Because of me– it is all my fault, I am the cause of the problem Because of others – it’s not all because of my actions Examples: John doesn’t want to work with me in class Thoughts: I am no good to work with in class, I’m just not smart enough or If I do a really good job with someone else this time, he may want to work with me next time Brightside (Optimistic) thinking Versus Unhelpful thoughts (Pessimistic) thinking Brightside (Optimistic) thinking Versus Unhelpful thoughts (Pessimistic) thinking Brightside (Optimistic) thinking Versus Unhelpful thoughts (Pessimistic) thinking Helpful or Unhelpful thoughts? I’m not good at this. My friend won’t play, she might be feeling unwell. If I try hard, I will get better. I never get to choose the game. I have lots of friends. My Dad never has time to play with me. I’ll never be good at writing. It always rains when I have my party. My sister hates me. I know I can do better next time. I always make mistakes when I do my spelling test. Mum can’t help me now, but I know that’s because she is busy cooking dinner Talking to myself Today we have Revised our thinking and understand that we can choose if it is temporary or permanent specific or global because of others or because of me Been introduced to the ‘Talking to myself’ poster’ Optimism and Positive thinking Picture book
