Our Mission
Pitt Dance Marathon is a family of campus leaders and community partners united in
cultivating hope for the current and future patients of the Children’s Hospital of
Pittsburgh. We strive to create, at the University of Pittsburgh, a legacy of campus-wide
engagement through yearlong philanthropy celebrated by the love of dance. Together,
we save lives!
What is PDM?
The University of Pittsburgh’s largest student-run philanthropy, Pitt Dance Marathon is a
yearlong fundraising event concluding with a 16-hour dance marathon. Throughout the
school year, students from a variety of organizations raise money through canning and
an assortment of creative fundraisers for local Pittsburgh charities. Over the past 10
years, PDM has raised over $566,000 directly benefitting the greater Pittsburgh
community. In 2015, the goal was to raise $100,000 but we exceeded our goal and
raised a total of $153,067.99 for Children’s Miracle Network.
Who is PDM raising money for?
PDM has partnered with Children’s Miracle Network to raise $300,000 which directly
benefits Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. As the sole fundraising arm of
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Foundation’s mission is to provide financial
support for the hospital’s mission of excellence in patient care, teaching and research.
What is Children’s Miracle Network?
Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1983
to raise money to help save the lives of children in your community. Since being
founded, CMN has raised over $5 billion for over 170 hospitals across the United States
and Canada.
Where is the money going?
The money that is raised for CMN goes directly to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of
UMPC. The funds we raise help pay for non-medical expenses such as playrooms,
therapy programs, and activities to help children and families cope with the struggles of
illness, as well as state-of-the-art medical equipment that saves lives every day.
Who are we helping?
The patients at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh are children who are battling cancer,
suffering from a traumatic injury, born too early and need care, have a genetic disease
or any other major medical issue. Regardless of the medical condition, these are
children in our community who are suffering and need our help!

If your organization would like to can at Giant Eagle, High School
Football Games, etc. please contact Brittany and she will set it up
for you.
Rules
 YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CAN ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!
o Example: Do not stand on Heinz Field or Consol Energy
Center property. Stand across the street
 If you are asked to leave an area, leave the property
immediately
o Contact Brittany so she can take it off of the list of
places/events
 Be smart and be safe
 Know what the event is and the information so you can
respond to questions by donors
 Do not hound donors; if they say no simply smile and say
have a nice day!
 Be polite and appropriate! You are not only representing
your organization but also PDM and the university as well
 Say thank you after someone donates money, no matter
how large or small the donation is
 After you are done canning for the day, contact Brittany and
report the total amount for that day and location
o We are going to try to keep a total amount of money
raised just through canning alone
Canning Money
After you receive money from canning, please do one of the
following
 Deposit it into your organizations account
o Keep a track of how much money you are raising and
at the end of each semester write a check to PDM
 Contact Brittany or the presidents (Kayla or Tori) to give it to
them
o Count the money donated
o Put it in an envelope with how much money is in it
o Delivery it to the Greek Life/Pitt Dance Marathon
Office on the 6th Floor of the Union
o All money received will be counted again by a PDM
board member and kept track of
Tips
 Can in khakis (shorts or pants) and PDM shirts so that you
will be noticed
 Can in groups not by yourself
 Have an elevator pitch in mind
o “Hi, have you heard of PDM? PDM is the University of
Pittsburgh’s largest student-run philanthropy. We are
raising money for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
Foundation. All donations go to our local Children’s
Miracle Network Hospital, Children’s Hospital of
Pittsburgh, so all the funds stay local and help local
kids. Would you like to make a donation today?”
 Smile and be friendly!!
 Do no be afraid to approach people and move around some
 When asking if someone would like to donate, say even a
penny helps
