History

• James Naismith was the Canadian PE teacher who
invented basketball in 1891.
• It all started with two peach baskets connected to a 10
foot high railing and a soccer ball in a YMCA in
Massachusetts.
• The 1st formal rules were created in 1892.
• Players would dribble a soccer ball up and down a
court, points were earned by landing the ball in a
peach basket.

• If a player shoots from the 3 point line and makes
it, the team gets 3 points.
• Shots made inside the 3 point line are worth 2
points.
• A free throw shot is worth 1 point.
• Traveling violation: A player cannot move
while carrying the ball.
• Double dribble violation: The ball cannot
be dribbled with both hands at once.
• No hitting, holding, or pushing. If done
then it will be considered a foul. After 6
fouls the player is ejected from the game.
Skills
• Dribble: to advance the ball in front of you while
maintaining control of the ball.
• Pass: to transition the ball from one teammate to
another.
- Over head Pass: ball tossed high to keep above
and away from opponent.
- Chest Pass: ball tossed at chest level without
touching the floor.
- Bounce Pass: ball tossed to the ground to bounce
half way between teammate.
• Shot: throwing the ball in attempt to score.
