PTA Magic Show
On Tuesday night our PTA held a special magic event for the infant children. It began with a
variety of tricks in a magic show, then the children finished off with a chance to boogie at the
disco. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and were disappointed when it finished. We would like
to thank the PTA for all their support in organising events and for providing us with additional
financial support to help buy equipment, which unfortunately we are unable to buy from our
school budget. They are always looking for new members to help and suggest new ideas, so if you
are interested in joining our PTA, please contact [email protected] by email or check out their
Gleadless PTA Facebook page. Their next big event will be the Summer Fair on Saturday 17th June
– so put this date in your diary!
Meet A Creature
On Wednesday our Reception children were visited by a number of exotic creatures as part of
their meet a creature visit. The children were given the opportunity to handle the animals,
including snakes, spiders, tortoises, rabbits, geckos and a bearded dragon lizard called Katie. For
some of the children it was the first time they had been so close to these unusual and sometimes
frightening creatures. The animal man showed the children that there was nothing to fear and a
number of children managed to tackle their fears and touch or hold creatures that they had
previously been scared of. From our pictures below you can see how much they enjoyed getting
close to the animals.
Advice Drop-in Session
Vicky Thevenon our pupil support officer and Fiona Smith will be holding a free parent drop-in
session on Thursday 25th May from 8.00 – 10.00 am. This will be held in the school library and
anyone can pop in for free advice about a number of family issues. These include benefits,
housing, behaviour in or out of school, bedwetting and support mechanisms. Refreshments will
be available and you can pop in at any time to speak to a member of our pastoral team. If you
would prefer a confidential appointment these can also be arranged. If you would like more
details or would like to arrange a private 1 to 1 appointment, please contact the school office.
Plant Orders
Please can we remind you if you would like to order plants as advertised in last week’s newsletter,
that all orders need handing into the school office by the end of the school day on Monday 22nd
May. If you need another copy of the order form, these are available from the school office. Please
put your completed order form in an envelope with payment (either cash or a cheque made
payable to ‘Moss Valley Nurseries’) and your plant order will then be delivered to school, ready
to collect at the end of the school day on Thursday 25th May. Remember the school will receive
15% of every order to help support school funds.
Sparkle And Shine
Once again our Friday morning started with our Sparkle And Shine assembly. Below are our star
pupils from last week who received their special awards for all their hard work. Well done!
Cricket Tournament
Last Friday our cricket team took part in a cricket tournament at Millhouses Park. Unfortunately
the weather was not good, but the team still managed to play two games before the rain stopped
play. They played against Sharrow School and Mundella Primary, winning one game and losing
one game – but still managed to get through to the next level on point scores. The next
tournament will be on Tuesday 27th June and we look forward to bringing you updates on their
performance in our newsletter. Well done to our cricket team.
Twycross Zoo
After a busy week doing their SATs tests the Year 6 children had a welcome break from their
studies on Monday and went onto a trip to Twycross Zoo. Fortunately the rain stopped in time for
the children to wander around the zoo, looking at all the many great creatures they have. The
children were able to learn more about the animals, where they originate from and the kind of
habitats they live in. Some of the children even got a chance to handle and feed some of the
animals. It was a lovely, relaxing, fun day for all.
Reception Reading
Last week we reminded you about the parent drop-in reading sessions that take place in Year 1 Year 6. On Friday our Reception children held their own special Early Bird reading session for
parents to come into school early and read with the children. This was the first reading session for
parents in our new classrooms and the children loved sharing their new reading and learning areas
with family and friends. We would like to thank all the parents and carers that came to join us
enjoying our favourite stories, thank you.
Reading is a lovely pastime that can be shared with young and old and some of our Year 6 children
have volunteered to share books and help our younger children with their reading during social
times. It has become a familiar sight to see children paired up together in classrooms, corridors
and reading areas to share books. Opportunities to do activities together have become so much
easier now that we are all based on one site. It is so nice to see that it has only taken a couple of
weeks for the older children to offer their support to the infant children. We would like to thank
the Year 6 children for offering to help and we are hopeful this will be the first of many activities
we can work on together.
Word Of The Week
This week our word of the week is LIBER. Remember to think of as many words as possible and
that liber can appear anywhere within the words you think of. At the beginning, at the end of
the word or even within the main body of the word. For example – deliberation.
Items Needed
Now we are getting settled in our new surroundings, Mrs Cooper is once again wanting to resurrect
our mud kitchen and we are eager for items to help fill it. The mud kitchen was always a popular
play area in the old infant building and was very well used. Unfortunately some of the equipment
had become damaged and broken, so we are looking for donations of any of the items in the list
below.
Saucepans, baking trays, plastic or wooden cooking utensils, pop-up tents, picnic benches or picnic
tables.
If you have any of these items at home which you no longer use and would be willing to donate
them to the school we would really appreciate it. All donations can be handed in at the school
office. Thank you.
Sports Sessions
We are often approached by local sports clubs when they are holding special events to give our
children the opportunity to join in and also sometimes try new sports. Below are a couple of sports
events that may be of interest to you.
Cricket
Hollinsend Cricket Club which is based on Fox Lane at Frecheville have joined a new scheme called
- All Stars Cricket, sponsored by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board). The scheme supports
sessions for children to attend to learn how to play cricket, gain new skills and meet new friends.
Each child receives a personalised kit, which needs to be paid for, but once the kit has been
purchased the sessions are free. These sessions are for children aged from 5 - 8 and run for eight
weeks. The first session starts on Thursday 25th May at 6.15 - 7.15pm. If you are interested you
can find out more details on their website www.allstarscricket.co.uk.
Tennis
We have also been contacted by Ridgeway Tennis Club to let you know about some free tennis
sessions that they will be holding. These are sponsored by LTA British Tennis as part of the Great
British Tennis Weekend scheme. Sessions will take place on Sunday 4th June from 2.00 – 5.00 pm.
For more details please check the website www.ita.org.uk/gbtw. This may be the ideal
opportunity for you to see if you are a budding tennis star.
