Mathematics Professional Learning Opportunities Brought to you by the Mathematics Team in the Department of STEM Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning Division of Teaching and Learning NYC Department of Education EVENTS REGISTRATION PAGE: http://bit.ly/Math_PL EFFECTIVE PRACTICES Event RtI in Math Overview: Effective Practices Nationally renowned RtI experts Doug and Lynn Fuchs along with national RtI and math specialist Sarah Powell and Leanne Ketterlin-Geller will be facilitating an intensive five-session seminar on effective practices for RtI in mathematics for grades K-8. Sessions 1-3 will focus on effective practices for Tier 1 intervention, and two sessions 4-5 will focus on effective practices for Tier 2 intervention. Over the course of the five sessions, there will be breakout opportunities for both elementary and middle school participants to provide more targeted content work specific to the K-5 and 68 grade bands. Grade Dates Time K-8 Fri 11/13 Mon 12/14 Mon 1/25 Fri 3/18 Fri 5/20 8:30 am to 3:00 pm K-3 Tue 11/17 Wed 11/18 Tue 4/5 Wed 4/6 8:30 am to 3:00 pm Target Audience: School-Based Staff K-8, Borough Field Support Center Staff, Central Staff, and Superintendents. Registration Note: These sessions will build upon each other, so registrants should plan to attend all five sessions. Improving Early Childhood Math with ECAM A strong foundation in mathematics for the early grades is crucial to a student’s mathematical development throughout school. The Early Childhood Assessment in Mathematics (ECAM) can help teachers get a very specific view of a student’s mathematical development. This powerful interview assessment tool is designed for early childhood, K-2, students. It is a research-based comprehensive interview assessment tool developed for NYC, the property of the DoE, and has recently been aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards in Mathematics. This assessment is a way to carefully monitor the child’s progress for early elementary mathematics. Join us for this workshop and learn how to effectively use the tool and understand how to best support students in taking the next developmental steps in mathematics. Target Audience: School-Based Staff K-3, Borough Field Support Center Staff, Central Staff, and Superintendents. Registration Note: This session will be repeated multiple times, so registrants need only attend one session. 1 | MATHEMATICS Five Instructional Practices to Support Mathematical Understanding Join Go Math! author and Professor of Mathematics Education at University of Central Florida, Juli Dixon in this full day workshop. Participants will explore five essential instructional processes that emphasize the mathematical practices and the content they support. Participants will engage with high cognitive demand tasks, selected from the Go Math! curriculum, and how to support them during instruction. You will enhance your understanding of these processes through the use of authentic video in classrooms. K-5 Tue 11/3 8:30 am to 3:00 pm Target Audience: School-Based Staff K-8, Borough Field Support Center Staff, Central Staff, and Superintendents INTEGRATED LEARNING Event Elementary Science meets Elementary Mathematics and the Common Core Learning Standards in Mathematics “How do I really design a science unit that deeply integrates worthwhile mathematics?” This session will provide educators the opportunity to engage in activities that introduce educators to the connections between the elementary science and elementary mathematics. Throughout the session, teachers will explore how an inquiry-based lesson will encourage an exploration of scientific concepts as well and engage students deeply in Common Core aligned mathematics. Participants will have the opportunity to address a unit design that represents a deeper connection and engagement between the two disciplines. Grade Dates Time K-5 Thu 12/17 Thu 2/4 Mon 3/21 Mon 5/23 8:30 am to 3:00 pm 6-8 Fri 12/18 Fri 1/22 Fri 2/5 Tue 3/8 8:30 am to 3:00 pm 9-12 Fri 12/18 Fri 1/8 Fr 3/18 Wed 4/20 8:30 am to 3:00 pm Target Audience: Pairs of elementary K-5 teachers, including science cluster teachers. This opportunity is designed specifically for teacher pairs, and collaborating teachers from the same school should register together. Integrated Science and Math Project for Middle School Partner Teachers Participants will gain a better understanding of integrated lessons through the study of one unit that integrates Data Analysis and Energy Transformations. This professional learning experience will lead science and math partners in learning how to engage in conversations about content in science and math and collaboratively plan an integrated lesson of their choice that will be delivered during Spring 2016. Target Audience: Middle school science and math teacher pairs. Registration Notes: This opportunity is designed specifically for science and math teacher pairs, and collaborating teachers from the same school should register together. These sessions will build upon each other, please to attend all four sessions. Integrating Algebra 1 and Living Environment for Collaborating Teachers Participants will examine the connections between Living Environment and Algebra 1 by engaging in and analyzing an example task to identify opportunities for students to learn the content and practices of both disciplines. Participants will discuss and identify features of meaningful math-science integration. Teacher pairs will design an integrated activity, implement the activity during the 2015-2016 school year, and analyze the resulting student work. The created activities will be shared among participants.
