BMZRC Team Trophy Challenge
Proposal to change current method of scoring
The Proposal
For those that prefer the abridged version: the suggestion is to halve the points accrued by one of the
riders in each team and double the points for the second rider. That's the short version. If you can be bothered
to read on, further information is below.
Why?
I believe the proposal will have the following benefits:
1. Closer competition - less of a done deal when teams are formed with the fastest riders.
2. More bias towards team performance than one person winning the majority of points for a team.
3. Potentially more people taking part in the team championship as a result of the above.
Justification
The past few years have shown us that the fastest riders in the paddock tend to be at the top of the
team trophy table.
In 2014, Woodall, Taylor and Rogers were in the top 3 placed teams. In 2015, it was Rogers, Woodall
and Taylor. In 2016, it's Woodall and Rogers with budding aliens Kent and Howlett following (full points TBC). I
had to look back to 2011, where names aren't shown in the end of team trophy table, to find a year where the
top 3 championship riders aren’t in the final team trophy standings. This means the team trophy is almost a
reflection of the main championship.
How would previous years have looked using the proposed system?
The following tables show a comparison of the current and proposed scoring system for recent years:

PAGE 2 / 3
Current wording of the rules
“Two riders team up and their Championship scores are added together for the Team Trophy. A maximum of
one rider in each team may have finished in the top ten of the previous season’s main MZ Championship.”
Proposed new wording of the rules
“Two riders team up and their Championship scores are added together for the Team Trophy. A maximum of
one rider in each team may have finished in the top ten of the previous season’s main MZ Championship.
Points are calculated as follows:
-
Team points will reflect the points scored in the main championship by each rider; however,
Where teams have a rider that has finished in the top ten of the previous season, that rider’s points
will be halved.
The second member of the team will have their points doubled.
Where teams do not have a rider that has finished in the top ten of the previous season, the team
must elect a rider to receive half points. The selection cannot be changed once decided.
In the case where team points are tied, the following can be used to define table position:
-
The team that has the most even split (percentage) of points provided by each rider in the team will be
placed higher.
If the above provides no separation, then the team who has accrued the most points in the last 3
rounds of the season (following the rules set out above) will be placed higher.”
In summary
The tables above appear to show that the proposed scoring system would help to avoid the team
trophy challenge being a reflection of the main championship; however, the proposed system would not
remove entirely the chance for a championship contender to be placed highly in the team trophy challenge.
I believe the proposal will give the team championship a little shake up and it would introduce a little
variation.
Cheers,
Lee MZ#2.
