The Official Newsletter of the Famous Maroon Band
The Famous Maroon Band at Mississippi State
University has one of the oldest traditions in the
Southeast and has been a significant part of the
Mississippi State family for more than one hundred
and ten years.
Directors’ Desk
Greetings from the Band Hall!
We hope that your summer is going well and that you are getting excited about the 2016 football
season! Believe it or not, kickoff for our first game against South Alabama is just a few weeks
away.
2016 Halftime Shows
Thanks to the good work of our student show selection committee, we have some great shows
planned for this fall. Our first show is a “Diva” show and will feature Aretha Franklin, Dianna
Ross, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and Adele. Our second show will feature the music
of the legendary Chuck Mangione. Later in the season, we will be doing a Spy show, featuring
music from James Bond and some other spy themed music that is still to be determined. In
addition, we will perform our annual patriotic show and homecoming shows as we have in the
past. As you can see, it’s going to be a busy year for the FMB!
2016 Special Events
Our Marching Honor Band is scheduled for September 3rd (vs. South Alabama). Be sure to tell
your friends at home about this and encourage them to apply. Details will be posted on our
website soon. We will host our annual Parent Day and Alumni Band on October 29th (vs.
Samford). This continues to be one of the highlights of each season with over 700 parents,
family members, and alumni attending. More information will be available closer to the event.
Band Camp
Band camp is our most important week of the year, and your attendance is required. We will
work hard during this week, but we will have some fun as well. We all know that it will be hot in
August, so please prepare yourself accordingly this summer by spending some time
outside. This is one thing everyone can do to make our camp positive and productive.
Class Registration/Membership
Everyone should be registered for marching band (MU 2511) no later than Monday, July 11th. If
you have not yet added the class, please do so as soon as possible so that we can make
appropriate preparations for you at band camp. If you are not registered for the class by July
11th , you will not be included in our show planning for this Fall. If you have received this
newsletter, then you are on our office roster, but that doesn’t mean you are registered for the
class. Please check and let us know if your plans have changed so that we can make adjustments
in our plans for the season.
There is a lot of important information in this newsletter, so please read it very carefully. Band
camp check-in, dorm check-in and the summer uniform information are a few of the more
important items that need your attention. We will also begin to communicate with you through
your msstate.edu email account, so please check that account frequently for additional
information.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and Hail State!!

Tell Us Your Story...
Thoughts from FMB Members
Nothing can compare to that first game. The
fans and all those cowbells; it's just awesome.
Of course there's going to be a lot of work, but it
all pays off when you step on the field and look up
to see the excitement of the crowd. I guess one tip I
can give to incoming members is not to listen to the crowd.
I won't tell you why... you'll just have to find out for yourself ;).
There is no other feeling than that very first
performance. As I marched on the field for the very first
time in Davis Wade Stadium there was this deafening
sound coming from thousands of people yelling and
ringing their cowbells. I remember being so nervous to
know that thousands of people were to my back. When
we finally marched onto the field, turned to face the
crowd and hit that huge first chord of the show, I was
hit by this enormous feeling of satisfaction mixed
with a little bit of "Ohhhhhh Yeeeeaaaahhhh." It's
really hard to explain a feeling quite like that, but I
know I will never forget it. It was truly an awesome
experience and I look forward to another great year
with the FMB. Hail State!
Kristyn Martin (Trumpet), Communication
-David Brown (Trumpet), Music Education
College can be a strange overwhelming place at first
but becoming a member of the Famous Maroon Band
leads to instant friends. The FMB will soon become
like your family and a great support system. You’ll
laugh and cry together, get to experience great
football games (not to mention traveling to
awesome bowl games) and cheer on the Dawgs
with some of your best friends. We put in hours of
work, but as you step on that field to perform, you
will feel a sense of accomplishment and exhilaration. It
is truly one of the best times of college life, and I would not
change it for the world!
Being in The Famous Maroon Band has truly been an
amazing experience. This band has given me so many
opportunities my past three years at this university, and I
honestly don't think I would have gotten this anywhere else.
From being in the Clarion Ledger to appearing on College
Game Day this organization has paved the way for all of
these! The FMB has allowed me to dance, cheer, and
celebrate all over the nation and I can't wait to do it one
final year with this amazing family.

Dorm Check-In Procedures
FRIDAY, AUGUST 5th, 2:00 – 5:00PM
NEW band members (freshman and transfer students): The Housing department has extended an opportunity for our new band
members to check into their dorm 1 DAY EARLIER than the rest of the students living on campus. Report to the front desk of your
assigned dorm with your MSU ID card to receive your key, paperwork, etc. If you choose not to take advantage of this early move in
date, you will need to follow the regular check in procedures on August 6th. This early move in opportunity should give our new
members ample time on Saturday morning to check in at the band hall before 11:00am for Pre-School Band Camp. Remember, we
will begin our general meeting with all new band members at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 6th.
Drumline & Leadership Dorm Check-In Procedures
MONDAY, AUGUST 1st (Percussion) & WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3rd (Squad Leaders, DMs, KKPsi leadership, and
Social Committee): There will be a central check in location this year, most likely in the Housing Office in Herbert Hall. These
details will be finalized in mid-July and communicated to you via email. If you are assigned to Dogwood Hall (new upperclassmen
dorm) or Davenport Hall (mostly freshmen), we cannot guarantee their completion status at this time. If they are not ready for early
check in, the plans for temporary housing will be communicated to you via email as soon as we know something from Housing.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL DURING THE SUMMER!
During Pre-School Band Camp, those students who live on campus should not drive to the
Band Hall. Leave your vehicle parked in your residence parking zone and walk or bike to the
Band Hall. Those students who live off campus should car pool as much as possible and plan to
park behind the MSU Student Health Center. Parking in the gravel lot beside the band hall
and across the street in the South Zone will be strictly prohibited.

my family recently moved to Brandon, MS. I am a Music Education
major with a double concentration in trombone and voice. This
summer, I am working in the band office so if you are up visiting
Starkville, don’t hesitate to stop by and say hi! I am very excited for
this upcoming season in the Famous Maroon Band as it looks to be
another great season of Mississippi State Football! We have a
wonderful band staff and team of Drum Majors who are just as

that are predominately white and have white shoelaces. 2) Short white socks. 3) “Dockers style” khaki
shorts (not olive or sand colored, and not cargo shorts). Please have these additional items secured by the
