These instructions cover the learner activity section which can be found on page 5. This
Lesson Element supports Cambridge Technicals Level 3 in Digital Media.
When distributing the activity section to the learners either as a printed copy or as a
Word file you will need to remove the tutor instructions section.
The activity
The aim of this Lesson Element is to allow learners to develop their ability to interpret a client
brief. They are asked to analyse a brief and assess what it requires with regards to the target
audience. Learners are then required to come up with solutions for the issues regarding the
target audience.
Suggested timings
Activity 1: 20 minutes.
Activity 2: 30 minutes.

Activity 1
In this activity the learners will analyse a project brief by carrying out a SWOT analysis.
Learners will need to be taught how to use a SWOT analysis.
The tutor will need to divide the class into small groups of between two and four, and then
instruct the learners to read the Road Safety Computer Game client brief and, in their
groups, perform a SWOT analysis on it to determine the requirements for the development
of the computer game, recording their findings in the template provided.
Client brief: Road Safety Computer Game
You have just started work for a well-established company which specialises in creative and
educational electronic games. The company has been approached by a road safety
organisation, who would be interested to see how games could be used to promote the
launch of a new road safety campaign. They are not aware of any games on the market that
do this.
You have been asked to submit a design proposal for one level of a new game based on
teaching children how to use the roads safely. The game must have clearly defined
objectives by which the child playing it can progress through to higher levels. There must be
a scoring and time tracking system. The game must also be instructional in how to use the
roads safely.
The target audience for the game is children aged between the ages of 6 and 10. The game
is to be played on touch enabled devices.
The campaign is due to be launched in four months’ time. The game needs to be ready for
this launch. If you are given the go ahead for the project, you will have three weeks for preproduction and then ten weeks for game development.

Activity 2
In this task, learners will be asked specifically to look at one aspect of the target audience –
its age – and the impact that it will have on the game design.
Learners should be divided into pairs, and instructed to:
1. Research how the game’s target audience’s age range of 6-10 years will affect how the
game will be designed, focusing on the areas given in the diagram, namely:

Controls used

Colours used

Instructions given

Scoring/success system complexity.
2. Add their design recommendations to their game proposal, justifying them according to
what they have found out about designing/creating for a young target audience.

In this Lesson Element, you will:
 carry out a SWOT analysis for a given project
 analyse the target audience requirements
 justify recommendations for inclusion in the game, based upon these requirements.
Activity 1
For this activity you will be placed in small groups of between two and four.
Read the client brief for a computer game for young children about road safety. You need to
know how to carry out a SWOT analysis of this brief to analyse the requirements for the
