Spatial Innovation Showcase 2011- student competition

Chairman’s introduction
Tasmania’s Spatial Innovation Showcase is an initiative of
the Tasmanian Spatial Information Council (TASSIC).
This one-day event is to be held in the Boardwalk Gallery
and Wellington Room at Wrest Point Conference Centre,
Hobart, on Thursday 27 October 2011.
In accordance with TASSIC’s principles of collaboration,
Council has joined forces with the Department of Primary
Industries, Parks, Water and Environment and the
Tasmanian Region of the Surveying and Spatial Sciences
Institute in hosting this event.
The Spatial Innovation Showcase will provide an opportunity for individuals and
organisations in Tasmania to view a range of inspiring, practical applications of current
technologies and spatial projects through presentations and displays.
This year’s theme is to ‘get a new outlook on the world . . . why location REALLY matters for
Tasmania’s future’.
The event will provide speakers with the opportunity to demonstrate innovative initiatives,
projects and activities that showcase the role and application of spatial information, as well as
providing opportunities for specialist professional development.
In addition to presentations from key experts and practitioners, the event will also feature a
student competition, with a chance for secondary and tertiary students to exhibit their
innovative ideas for the use of spatial information.
The final session of the day will be dedicated to student presentations. Each student will be
allowed five minutes to present his/her idea, culminating in presentation of a ‘People’s
Choice Award’ in secondary and tertiary categories.
On behalf of TASSIC, I invite you to participate in this initiative to showcase your ideas and
help us demonstrate the full benefits that spatial information can provide for all Tasmanians.

SSSI endorsement
On behalf of the Tasmanian Region of the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI), I am
delighted to invite you to join us at the inaugural Spatial Innovation Showcase, a cooperative
enterprise between SSSI Tasmania, TASSIC and DPIPWE. I would particularly like to extend an
invitation to SSSI members.
This is a unique opportunity to come along and see for yourselves not just the new and
emerging technologies and innovations, but how the spatial industry unites a diverse range of
individuals, from students to experienced practitioners and the multi-faceted businesses
which make up our wider spatial community.
There are many exciting developments in the spatial industry and this will be a fantastic
opportunity to see many of these and gauge their application for private businesses and
government agencies in Tasmania.
The Showcase will provide many opportunities – formal and informal – to network and
exchange ideas with your peers. We at SSSI Tasmania, along with our Showcase partners,
look forward to welcoming you at Wrest Point on Thursday, October 27 2011.
Penny Douglas
Chair, SSSI Tasmanian Region
DPIPWE welcome
The Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) is Tasmania’s
lead natural resources agency, responsible for the sustainable management, use and
protection of the State’s natural resources and cultural heritage, and the support of the
primary industry and food sectors.
Most people in Tasmania will at some time need to access spatial information products and
services provided by the Department. The Information and Land Services Division of DPIPWE
is responsible for many of these products and services, including land titles, survey plans,
TASMAP products and a vast range of other spatial data available through the LIST.
The true value of spatial information in planning and decision-making processes is being
realised right across private business and public sectors. Our challenge is to improve our
data, products and services to meet the expanding needs of government and the community.
Part of responding to that challenge is to keep informed and up-to-date with national and
international initiatives and trends.
We are proud to be working with TASSIC and SSSI to provide our many and varied
stakeholders with an opportunity to see first-hand some of the fantastic work being done
across a range of jurisdictions.

Student awards
TASSIC recognises the importance of education and educational institutions in the advancement
of spatial technology and the future use and management of spatial information in Tasmania.
Innovative – and sometimes unorthodox – ideas can often be the forerunners of exceptional
initiatives and brilliant outcomes.
As part of the inaugural Spatial Innovation Showcase to be held on 27 October 2011, TASSIC is
extending an invitation to resident students studying any of the spatial sciences in Tasmania, at a
secondary or tertiary level, to participate in a student competition and ‘People’s Choice Award’.
Entries in the student competition should be consistent with the theme ‘get a new outlook on the
world’ and present original ideas revolving around the use of spatial information. The
competition provides a chance to be innovative and creative in solving real world problems of
interest to students and teachers.
We’re looking for smart, innovative ideas that address real world problems or opportunities and
that exploit the power of spatial technologies and spatial information. Be creative, be innovative,
think outside the box. Your proposals don’t need to have been tested.
Competition entrants will be provided with an opportunity to present their ideas in the final
session of the day, culminating in an awards ceremony. Entrants and supervising teachers will be
admitted to the event between 3pm and 5pm free of charge. Student presentations will be
limited to five minutes per entrant.
If you have an original and exciting idea or project to enter – and ideally one that you can
demonstrate in five minutes – please complete and submit the attached form by email to
[email protected]. Entries close on 20 September 2011.
Entries will be subject to a preliminary suitability assessment by members of TASSIC’s Skills,
Capability and Training Working Group. Entrants will be contacted by 27th September 2011 to
confirm acceptance and to invite them to present their ideas at the Showcase.
2
Eligibility
Individual, team or collaborative ideas and projects may be entered. The two categories are:

People’s Choice Award (tertiary coursework students)
Students eligible to enter this award include certificate, diploma or undergraduate students
from Polytechnic or University, and graduate students including Honours, Graduate
Certificate/Diploma and Masters by coursework. To be eligible for this award, the student
or team must have completed a relevant spatial sciences subject during the calendar year
2010 or in the first academic semester of 2011.


People’s Choice Award (secondary school/college students)
All secondary school/upper secondary college students are eligible to enter this award,
either individually or as a team. The competition is open to any students using spatial
technology in challenging, informative and fun ways to assist in solving a problem from any
area of the curriculum, or with a proposal to apply spatial sciences and technology to
address a real world problem. To be eligible for this award, the student/team must be
enrolled and studying at a Tasmanian secondary/upper secondary school in 2011.

Judging
Student competition entry forms will be accepted up until close of business on Tuesday, 20
September 2011. Final entry and electronic presentation material must be submitted to TASSIC
no later than Friday 5 October 2011.
Entries will be displayed throughout the day at the Spatial Innovation Showcase and reviewed by
participants at the event, culminating in a five-minute presentation by each entrant in the last
session of the day. Presentations may be conducted by students and/or teachers/supervisors.
After the completion of presentations, Showcase participants will vote, winners will be
announced and prizes presented.
All decisions are final. No correspondence will be entered into once the winners are announced.
Information about entries and entrants in the competition may be made public after the event
and featured on the TASSIC website.

Permissions and supervision
Students under the age of 18 travelling to and from the event must be accompanied by a
responsible adult – a parent, guardian or supervisory teacher. Student transport and supervision
at the event must be arranged by the relevant educational institution, with the consent and
agreement of students and parents or guardians.
For collaborative or team entries, the relevant educational institution is also responsible for
arranging the permission/consent of those involved in developing ideas and projects entered.
