About PFUR
Today Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia is one of the leading state higher
educational institutions of Russia. It is the only university in the world every year uniting

Program description
The master program “International Project Management” has been run on the department
of economic and mathematical modeling of the economics faculty of People’s Friendship
University of Russia since 2008. 46 students including 19 double diploma students have already
graduated from the Program and 48 students from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belorussia, Ukraine,
Kirgizia, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Macedonia, Armenia, Chad, and Haiti are now studying under it.
The main object of the master Program is educating highly demanded specialists in the
field of international project management.
The current context calls for the professionals who are able to do not only the routine
operation, but also unique and creative tasks resulting in different projects. The need in such
specialists will be increasing due to globalization and activization of integration processes.
Nowadays training the managers of international projects, namely the projects implemented
abroad both for foreign and domestic partners or the domestic projects for foreign customers, is
extremely crucial.
One of the leading aims of Russian high education is raising qualified and competitive
specialists able to work successfully both in Russian and international companies. Project
management is a new field of professional knowledge which is widely recognized and spread in
the countries with developed economy.
The masters of International Project Management Program should be able to do the
following tasks:

project management designing,

preparing tasks and project solution given the uncertainty factor,

developing the project documentation for tasks on description and improvement
of the strategy, the aims and the business processes of the organization,

participating in the strategic development of the economic agents on different
markets,

designing and implementing the projects aimed at the development of the
organization (firm, public company, etc),

organizing the team work for doing certain projects, tasks and duties,

business planning,

participating in the development and realization of the competitive strategy of the
corporation and the functional strategies (marketing, finance, HR, etc),

designing the organizational structure of the company,

controlling the business activity of departments and working groups,

estimating the project efficiency,

estimating the management decision efficiency,

gathering and analyzing the information on the methods and ways of management
used in the organizations,

gathering and analyzing the information on the micro- and macro-environmental
factors for making management decisions,

reporting on the analysis results,

advising on the investment decisions.
Core Curriculum
This program combines theory and practice for the effective and successful management
of international projects. It provides methods and technologies to develop managerial skills and a
better understanding of the main components of the project management.
The Master in Management specializing on the International Projects Management treats

The masters of the Program actively participate in the scientific research of the
department of economic and mathematical modeling and students’ conferences. Several
graduates of the Program are the winners of the annual international competitions for students
and postgraduates.

Course Description
Contemporary problems of management science and production
The course covers Modern problems of management and production which contemporary
management faces in the context of radical changes in economical, political, social, and
technological spheres. The course is aimed at acquiring advanced skills of administration in
order to reach strategic and managerial goals of the organization. It is also focuses at
development of up-to-date, client-oriented managerial thinking among Master of Management,
as well as at search of creative ideas and obtaining of a holistic effect, accumulation and
advancement of knowledge in the sphere of theory and practice of contemporary marketing.
The course touches upon such issues as values, principles, interests and ethic imperatives
in administrative practices; priorities of state management and elements of vector approach in
management; ideological component in management; topical issues of international human
resources management; newest concepts in theory and practice of management; the role of
strategic management in management of the company; the role of project management in
realization of the company’s strategy; the theory of holistic marketing; the role of strategic
marketing in forming long term competitive advantages of the company; modern approaches
from the theory and practice of “the learning organization;” main methods of network marketing
structure development.
Professional Foreign Language
The program is developed by the chair of the Department of Foreign Languages in the
College of Economics, member of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, professor E.N.
Maljuga, Ph.D. The program meets all the requirements of the State Educational Standard of
Higher Professional Education of the third generation and the regulations of The Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, issued by
the Council of Europe in 2003.
The program is developed to educate Master of Management to carry out professional
activities in a second language environment; use the second language in research; analyze and
process information obtained from sources written in other languages; present the results of work
in the form of reports and articles written in the second language.
The program rests on the competency and activity based approach to teaching foreign
languages. By the end of the course the student develops a complex of professional foreign
language competence components. The student develops the following competences: linguistic,
discourse, strategic, socio-cultural, social (pragmatic), professional linguistic, social and
informational, social and political, personal (individual), research, scientific and methodological,
self-educational.
Management Economics
“Management Economics” is a development of the basic courses in micro- and
macroeconomics, its main focus being on practical applications in managers’ future work. The
course covers much more extensively those parts of economic theory which make it possible to
give a realistic description of a modern company functioning (the business profit theory is
reviewed and studied in terms of its application to a multiproduct company; it is taken into
account that there are a number of differences between companies, and markets are imperfect;
besides, companies may have other goals in addition to maximizing their profits, and information
is limited and incomplete). An important place in the course structure is taken by consumer
behavior creating the demand, the former being studied in terms of marketing research of the
companies. While studying students are offered to develop their own optimization models for the
main directions of practical application of economic theory.
Methods of research in management
The course deals with approaches to making objective managerial decisions including
identification of problem statement stages, setting the goals and developing a solution plan based
on sociological and statistical studies. The data processing techniques are chosen according to
the data presentation qualitative and quantitative models that use MS Excel program.
The following data sampling approaches are studied as scientific research methods:
questionnaire surveys, hypothesizing and statistical verification, interpretation of the achieved
results in order to solve management problems.
The course is intended for management and marketing students as well as for all those
who are interested in the urgent management problems.
Theory of Organization and Organizational Behavior
“Theory of Organization and Organizational Behavior” studies organization nature as
well as individual and group behavior in an organization, special features of organizations as an
object of scientific research, the main steps and basic concepts concerning organization research
as part of historic development of organization theory at home and abroad. The subject covers
general organization laws and special features of social systems, dynamic organization
principles, management activity subjects, individual behavior and individual motivation, group
behavior and intergroup dynamics, interpersonal and intergroup communications. It also deals
with peculiarities of people’s behavior in different cultural environments and international
companies, ways of managing individual and group behavior in multinational corporations. The
inter-subject communication system that is the basis of this course makes it possible to better
identify the peculiarities of the organization behavior and the processes taking place in the
organization.
The subject aims at forming students’ essential professional and personal competencies in
terms of managing organizations, departments, groups (teams) of employees as well as abilities
to make plans of organizational development and changes and to ensure the plans fulfillment.
Corporate Finances
The course plays an important role in shaping students’ financial thinking and their
learning the techniques of taking reasonable decisions in the area of corporate finance
management. The content of the lessons includes the studies of finance management
fundamental concepts, principles of elaborating strategies for organization development;
methods of financial analysis and peculiarities of working capital management; methods of
investment decision assessment. Besides, students learn the reasons for using different
approaches to capital structure management and apply techniques of risk assessment and
measuring in making managerial decisions.
The following forms of classroom activities are used: role-plays, case-studies, group
discussions of problem questions. They also include simulation of applied problems of finance
management which allows students to acquire skills of making reasonable decisions.
For more advanced studies of certain questions students prepare a presentation-report on
the topics suggested.
Multimedia devices are used at the lessons (an overhead projector, a laptop). All the
necessary course information and assignments are available to students at the PFUR web-site

Modern Strategic Analysis
The course status: the course is compulsory for all second-year Master program students
and teaches them fundamentals of strategic analysis.
The course “Modern Strategic Analysis” aims at forming and developing students’
theoretical knowledge and practical skills of applying strategic analysis techniques to making
effective strategic decisions in modern economic conditions which contributes to improving the
efficiency of an organization’s activity on home and foreign markets.
International market requirements make it necessary to develop strategic plans that can
make a company competitive on the markets amid growing internalization of national economies
and globalization of economic activity, emergence and development of new markets.
Special attention in teaching certain parts of the course is given to students’ acquisition of
practical skills of applying strategic analysis techniques and developing development strategies
for real companies in different areas of activity.
The course allows students gain professional knowledge and skills, essential to future
entrepreneurs, chief executives and analysts in the areas of market research analysis,
competitiveness assessment of companies of different legal forms, making strategic decisions,
choosing the most effective strategies and actions on home and international markets, organizing
international business activity.
The course is based on the knowledge acquired by the students in such course as
“Strategic Management”, “Marketing” and other knowledge about economic theory, managerial
economics, international company management, sociology, higher mathematics, etc.
The lectures make the basis for students’ further acquisition of practical skills that they
learn at seminars in different forms: business games, case-studies, individual and group practical
activities, master classes, Internet-based assignments, etc.
Investment Analysis
The course covers the methods of investment analysis and management. It describes real
and portfolio investments, however, the main attention is given to the latter. Special attention is
paid to investment project risk assessment in the context of probabilistic indeterminacy. The
course materials can be used as the basis of feasibility studies, real project risk assessment and in
investment portfolio management.

 Investment project and its effectiveness assessment criteria;
 Methods of investment project financing;
 Securities yield and risk assessment;
 Yield and risks of security portfolio;
 Efficient portfolios;
 Portfolio management strategies.
Project Analysis
The Project Analysis course covers theoretical foundations and concepts of project
analysis, issues of environmental influence on investment projects, effectiveness evaluation
methods of investment projects, influence of inflation and the capital market on feasibility and
effectiveness of the investment project, project risk management. Special attention is paid to the
questions of technical and economic justification of the investment project according to the
methodology of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The course also
reviews the issues of investment project classification, financial analysis of project
documentation, methods of constructing money flows for investment projects.
Upon completion the course students obtain practical skills of preparing technical and
economic project justifications according to the methodology of the United Nations Industrial
Development Organization, and skills of carrying out expert evaluation of technical and
economic project justification.
Business-Engineering
The course analyses the main approaches to reassessment of fundamental business
structures and processes used to achieve a higher effectiveness level of company’s activity
during global changes in the world economy and in methods of doing business. The course
highlights the role of innovations in the sphere of information technologies and their impact on
methods of solving a wide spectrum of theoretical problems relating to management, and
practical approaches to engineering tasks and continuous process management. The course is
developed for students and instructors of economic schools, and everyone who is interested in
topical issues of management.
Contracts Management
This course incorporates the main aspects of contract management, in sales and delivery
in projects which contribute noticeably to work of organizations in order to carry out their goals
and strategies. Implementation of international terms of contract in accordance with legal aspects
and assessment of potential in preparation of the contract and negotiations. Possibility to develop
personal legal know-how to predict various situations during preparation of contracts without
assistance of third-party legal and financial experts. Considerable attention is paid to the analysis
of legal forms of companies in different countries of the world, major issues in preparation and
drawing contracts, analysis of common errors, and administrative issues.
Projects Management
The Projects Management course covers theoretical foundations and concepts of project
management, project environment, five groups of project management processes: initiation,
planning, organization of performance, control and completion of the project. Special attention is
given to the fields of project management: control of integration, content, time, costs, quality,
human resources, communications, contracts, project risks, to models and methods of project
management, as well as computer technologies for project simulations in Microsoft Office
Project. The suggested material can be viewed as a foundation for preparation to certification
examinations Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Associate for Project
Management (CAPM).
Information Systems Management
The Information Systems Management course is offered in the third semester of the
International Projects Management master’s program and is aimed at introducing students to
theory and practice of application of information systems to management, databases, stages of
the software life cycle in corporate management and its protection tools. Besides, the course
gives an idea about the kinds of computer technologies in order to develop evaluation skills to
assess appropriateness of various software products to carry out certain managerial tasks.
IT in Strategic Management
IT in Strategic Management is an elective course for Management Master of
Management specializing in International Processes Management. The course covers major
principles of strategic management and issues related to application of the newest information
technologies in strategic analysis, management of company development strategy, and
controlling of the strategy implementation process. The course pays a lot of attention to the
strategic management methodology developed in Harvard School of Business known as
Balanced Scorecard (the system of balances indicators), and its practical application with the
program and methodical complex Intalev: Navigator.
IT in Corporate Finances
The purpose of the IT in Corporate Finances course is to support students with practical
learning of advanced search, processing, and analysis methods and technologies for making
managerial decisions in corporate finances; to allow students to learn the practical side of
analytic procedures used in diagnostics of company’s financial and economic activities,
assessment of financial risks.
Throughout the course students master the methods of financial model simulation in
Excel spreadsheets, which allow them to assess financial results in various scenarios.
Part of the course concentrates on introduction and mastery of major methods of working
with the SAP ERP system.
Innovations Management
The course examines objective laws, theoretical foundations, advanced Russian and
international experience in shifting to the innovation-driven economy. The course covers the
nature and types of innovations, forms and methods of innovation process management,
innovation projects, formation of an innovation system in a company and on the national scale.
Special attention is given to the management of human capital assets formation, innovation
activity of business, the openness of the innovation system in the global economy and its further
development.
Managerial Accounting
The course covers the major objectives, tasks and concepts of management accounting in
companies. It examines various systems of cost accounting, calculation and analysis of prime
costs. The course also analyses issues of organizing company’s budgeting system based on
management accounting. The course expands on the role of the management accounting system
in making short- and long-term managerial decisions.
Analysis of the project risks
The Analysis of the project risks course is developed with the account of the modern
economics and international practice in project analysis, theory of risks, international project
management and effectiveness evaluation of investment projects. The materials of the course
consider the requirements of internationals standards in risk management: BSI “Management
System” and ISO 27005 “Information Security Risk Management;” they also reflect basic
approaches of the leader in project management PMI (Project Management Institute) and
corresponds with the works on project risk management that are being developed in PMI.
Preliminary knowledge for the course includes the basics of the theory of economics,
project analysis, general risk theory, risk management and elements of theory of administration.
Project risks and elements of general risk theory and theory of administration are the
subjects of the course.
Management of International Marketing Projects
Application of project methods in the system of company’s marketing activity
management is becoming more common among modern companies, when it is necessary to
implement every project in accordance with strategic goals, within the allotted time, with limited
funding and realization of results of the highest quality under the given restrictions.
The
increasing number of marketing tasks is carries out as projects. Application of methods of
marketing project management gains distinctive topicality especially in international activity of
companies, when it is the project management which allows to avoid undesirable risks for
companies entering foreign markets. This course introduces the specificity of ways to solve
various marketing tasks in the project format. The course covers issues of development and
realization of marketing projects, major stages and the system of project management. It also
presupposes acquisition of various approaches to planning of marketing projects, control of the
process of project implementation, drawing work schedules and budgets of marketing projects
and other directions in marketing project management. Significant attention is given to the
analysis of specific market situations, and application of project management in marketing of
Western and Russian companies. Certain topics are allotted to studying and mastering skills of
writing major types of documents used in marketing project management in Russian and foreign
companies. This skill is especially necessary for students’ future practice.
The purpose of this course is to provide students with necessary theoretical knowledge
about principles of international marketing projects management, and practical skills of applying
project management in the marketing activity of a company.
Analysis and Forecast of Market Conditions
The Analysis and Forecast of Market Conditions course is an important component in the
system of the basic training of managers of the highest qualification. The final goal of the course
is students’ acquisition of the methodology of collecting, statistical processing and analysis of
information about local and world market conditions; command of the methodology and
procedures of implementation of mathematical and statistical methods for analysis of various
segments in the world market as object for analysis and forecasting in determined, risky and
uncertain situations; command in techniques of processing and analysis of market conditions in
MS Excel (methods of sorting and filtration of data lists, implementation of calculated criteria in
condition analysis problems on the basis of adaptive and trend-seasonal models, simulation
methods for point and interval prognoses of seasonal variations in market conditions), as well as
techniques for MS Excel capabilities in identification of the type of employed information and
choice of adequate methods of its processing according to the specific goal and aim of condition
research and developed forecasts on the basis of standard economic and mathematical models.
Customs and Tariff Regulation
The Customs and Tariff Regulation is an elective course for students in the International
Projects Management program. The course covers a complex of legal customs and tariff
regulation aspects in external economic activity of the Russian Federation, as well as economic
components of separate regulatory institutes (customs value, customs payments, etc). The
practical part of the course presupposes solutions to the problems in determining the codes of
goods according to the Foreign Economic Activity Commodity Nomenclature, customs value
and calculations of customs payments, acquisition of skills in filling in the main custom forms on
the basis of commercial and transport documents of import, or export operations.
Double diploma program
The master International Project Management program gets a double diploma. The International
Institute of Management of the Conservatoire Nationale des Arts et Metiers (CNAM-IIM), Paris
(France) is the partner of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR). Web-site:

The first year of education is held at the PFUR both in Russian and English.
The second year – at the International Institute of Management of the Conservatoire
Nationale des Arts et Metiers (CNAM, Paris) in English. In this case a student gets a diploma of

des Arts et
Metiers.
