Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) Program Description Target Audience Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a strong evidence-based treatment for young children (2-7) and their parents/caregivers. Originally developed for children with significant disruptive behaviors, its effectiveness has been shown with children with adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, ASD, FASD, and children with a history of maltreatment. The Kaufman Best Practices report listed PCIT as one of the three best treatments for children with a history of maltreatment with studies finding recidivism rates of less than 20%. What makes PCIT unique? This short-term, strength-based treatment uses in vivo (live) coaching to help parents/caregivers learn the skills that will help them meet their goals. Consistent outcomes include: a) decreased behavior problems, b) improved pro-social skills, c) improved attention, d) improved language development, e) improved frustration tolerance and anger management, f) improved parent/caregiver-child relationship, g) reduced parenting stress, and h) reduced maternal depression. Recent adaptations of PCIT include helping military families cope with deployment stressors. This workshop will provide an overview of PCIT and examine how PCIT may fit into the service array of programs serving children and families in North Carolina. State-wide dissemination efforts will be discussed. Finally, a program based on PCIT and other evidence-based parenting programs (CARE) for use with all adults interacting with children of any age will be shared. The workshop will consist of didactics, discussion, and hands-on practice. This program has been planned for Sandhills Center staff and providers of mental health, I/DD, and substance use disorder services. Cost: Free This event is presented by Southern Regional AHEC for the Sandhills Center MCO. Registration is limited to their staff and providers. Limited to two persons per agency. Space is limited.
