WELCOME
Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached.
But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus,
our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him
more faithfully and effectively.

“Father, We Praise Thee”
Father, we praise Thee, now the night is over;
Active and watchful, stand we all before Thee;
Singing, we offer prayer and meditation:
Thus we adore Thee.

WE COME TO WORSHIP GOD
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: On that first day, when time began:
People: you gave birth to creation;
light danced through the darkness;
the waters of hope flowed free and clear.
Leader: On that first day at the Jordan, when redemption began:
People: you spoke of life for all your children,
as your Son stepped into the waters of forgiveness,
dancing in hope with his cousin, John.
Leader: On this first day of the week, when we begin anew:
People: you call us to faithfulness,
as we open our hearts to you,
your voice claiming us as your own.
*HYMN
“Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty”

CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Timeless God, you cast Light into sin's dark places and call us your Beloved. Forgive us:
2
when we still linger in the shadows; when we treat others in hurtful ways; when we
speak ill of your friends.
As he knelt in the waters of Jordan, you proclaimed Jesus as your Son, pointing to him
as the way to you. Forgive us: when we put ourselves ahead of him; when we think he is
no longer needed; when we fail to see him in the broken of our world.
Baptized and blessed in your living waters, you would have us be your servants in our
time. Forgive us: when we fail to welcome the stranger; when we refuse to forgive as we
should; when we believe we are too good to kneel down and tie the shoes of the lost, the
least, the last, the little. Amen.
SILENT PRAYER
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*GIVE GLORY TO GOD
“All People That on Earth Do Dwell”
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell,
Come ye before Him and rejoice.

Mark 1:4-11
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance
for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and
all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the
river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with
a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He
proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not
worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you
with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John
in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the
heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice
came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Acts 19:1-7
19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and
came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, “Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have
not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 Then he said, “Into what then were
you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John baptized
with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to
come after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit
came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— 7 altogether there
were about twelve of them.

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into
hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the
forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Garden State Sound Quartet to Hold Benefit Concert at UPC
Saturday, January 24 at 7 p.m.
Garden State Sound Quartet is made up of Kean University students and alumni, including
United Presbyterian Church's own Chris Neuman, who sings tenor. The Quartet wants to
bring barbershop and sacred music to the area in hopes of creating interest and of course to
entertain the public. Their premiere concert will be held in the sanctuary on Saturday, January
24, at 7:00 p.m. A freewill offering will be taken to defray the quartet's expenses and support
the work of the church. Come and you will get to hear voices that harmonize like angels!
Camp Johnsonburg is our mission focus for January. In 1959, Johnsonburg Presbyterian
Center was established to provide experiential Christian education in support of the
Presbyterian Church in New Jersey. Johnsonburg today is a place where city kids meet
country kids, where black and white discover common ground, where the rich and poor of
means and spirit are valued equally, and where each is encouraged to take another vital step
toward realizing oneness in Christ. Their services include: summer camp, programmed
7
retreats, spiritual sanctuary, conferences, special needs camp, and service to the homeless
through a partnership with Interfaith Hospitality Network.
All the gifts designated for Mission in January will support the mission of the Presbyterian
Camp and Conference Center at Johnsonburg. Please give generously so many more lives will
be touched.
