Assessment Practical For QOL Learning and Teaching The assessment tool allows you to set up various types of questions in a question bank (multiple choice, true/false, cloze procedure), create an assessment from the question bank, test it, view which students have taken the test and the score they have achieved. Entering the Assessment Tool Click the My Modules button on the Queen’s Online: My Homepage. Select and open the module you wish to work on from the module list. The selected module will be displayed with the following sections: Module Information, Communications and Other Resources. 3) From the Other Resources section click Assessment. 1) 2) Setting up Question Banks Assessments within QOL are set-up by drawing questions out of question banks. Therefore before an assessment can be created, question banks must be set-up first. 1) From the Assessment Management, click Question Banks 2) From the Manage question banks window click Add new (See Figure 2) Figure 2: Assessment tool Manage question banks window 3) In the Bank Name field enter a name, in this example “ Multiple Choice Bank” and ensure the Bank Type is set to Multiple Choice and click Create (See Figure 3) Figure 3: setting up Multiple Choice bank 4) This will open the Edit Bank window where you can see the banks that have been created. 5) Use the button to return to the Manage question banks window. Create two further banks one named Cloze Procedure Bank with Bank Type Cloze Procedure and the other named True False Bank with Bank Type True/False by repeating steps 2 –4. Your Bank List should now look like Figure 4. (Don’t worry about the Bank ID figure). 6) Figure 4. Bank List Adding Questions to a Question Bank Multiple Choice 1) In the Manage question banks window click Edit beside the Multiple Choice Bank. This permits more than one key value * Key value = Correct answer The Bin icon will allow you to delete the entry and the Folder icon will allow you to add another entry. Multiple Choice Question 3) Complete each field in the Create a New Question Window as in Figure 6 and click Create. At the top of the question page it will now tell you that the operation has been successfully completed. 4) Return to the Edit bank window by using the question. button and click Add new Figure 7. True/False Question 2) Complete each field in the Create a New Question window as in Figure 10 and click Create. 3) Return to the Edit Bank window by using the button and click Add new question. 4) Complete each field in the Create a New Question window as in Figure 11 and click Create. True/False Questions Cloze Procedure 1) Return to the Manage question banks window by using the click Edit beside Cloze Procedure Bank (See Figure 13) button and Figure 13. Closed Procedure Bank 2) In the Edit Bank window click Add new question 3) Complete each field in the Create a New Question window as in Figure 14 and click Create. Figure 14. Closed Procedure Questions 7) Return to the Manage question banks window by using the button Excluding a Question (For reference) You may wish for a question that has been created not to be included when an assessment is being created for some reason (e.g. you have used the question before) 1) If you are in the Manage question banks window click Edit beside the bank that houses the question you want to exclude. 2) This opens the Edit Bank window. Click Exc/Inc beside the question you want to exclude (The question text will now become dull. The default is that a question is not excluded) 3) If you wish to include an excluded question, carry out the above steps (The question text will return to normal). Editing a Question Bank (For reference) 1) In the Manage question banks window click Edit beside the bank you wish to edit. 2) This opens the Edit Bank window. From here you will be able to edit or delete question banks. Deleting a Question Bank (For reference) 1) In the Manage question banks window select the bank you wish to delete by clicking Delete beside the Bank Name. 2) Click Delete. A confirmation box appears, click Yes to permanently remove the bank or No to keep the bank. Deleting a Question from a Bank (For reference) 1) In the Manage question banks window click Edit beside the bank which houses the question you wish to edit. 2) This opens the Edit Bank window. From here you will be able to edit or delete questions. 3) Click Delete beside the question you wish to delete. A confirmation box appears, click Yes to permanently remove the bank or No to keep the bank. Editing a Question (For reference) 1) In the Manage question banks window select the question you want to edit by clicking Edit beside the question. 2) This will open the Edit Question window and you can change the various fields. 3) When you have finished editing the question, click Update to save the changes or click Reset and no changes will be made to the question. Creating an Assessment 1) Return to the Queen’s Online: Assessment Tool window by using the button (repeatedly, if necessary), or if you are in the module main menu of QOL, click Assessment in the Other Resources section of the module window. This will bring you to the Queen’s Online: Assessment Tool window. (See Figure 17) Figure 17. Queen’s Online: Assessment Tool window 2) Click Assessments. 3) In the Manage Assessments window click Add new. 4) In the Assessment Title field enter Test Assessment. 5) The Assessment Objectives field may be used to give instructions that may be associated with completing this Assessment. Copy the text for this field as laid out in Figure 18. 6) Leave the Random Assessment field at No. Note: *Random Assessment. If you select the random assessment option the student will not receive feedback and the lecturer will not receive results to analyse. 7) Enter 6 for the Number of questions. 8) Select Yes for Assessment available 9) Select Yes from the drop down menu beside Hints. (This will let the user view hints that were entered in the hint field during the question creation.) 10) For Max Tries enter 2. 11) Duration indicates the duration of the assessment in minutes. If the user exceeds this value then the assessment is not accepted. Leave it blank for no time restrictions. 12) From the Questions per Page enter 2. 13) Select After Completion from the drop down menu beside Feedback Level. Note: This is the only feedback type operational at present. 14) Ensure the marking scheme is set to Normal. (Negative marking is also available) 15) We must now select the questions from the questions banks we wish to use for our assessment. In the Bank Name section, select 2 for the Select number to use of each type of question. Your Assessment creation window should look like Figure 18. Figure 18. Assessment Creation window 16) Click Create. At the top of the page it will now tell you that the operation has been successfully completed. Viewing the Assessment and the Results 1) Return to the Queen’s Online: Assessment Tool window by using the button (repeatedly, if necessary), or if you are in the module main menu of QOL, click Assessment in the Other Resources section of the module window. This will bring you to the Queen’s Online: Assessment Tool window. (See Figure 17) 2) Select Take an Assessment. 3) This opens the Manage assessments window. 4) Select Take assessment and then complete the assessment. 5) You will be able to Review your Answers and return to Edit Assessment if necessary. If you are happy with your answers select Submit Assessment. (See Figure 19) Figure 19. Review your answers for assessment window. 6) The Results will be displayed. 7) To view student results, use the button to return to the Assessments available option window, or if you are in the module main menu of QOL, click Assessment in the Other Resources section of the module window. This will bring you to the Assessments available option window. (See Figure 20) Figure 20. Assessments available option window. 8) In the Manage assessments window selecting View results will allow you to view the details for each student. (See figure 21) Figure 21. Manage assessments window. 9) Selecting View grid results will allow you to view all questions and answers in a grid layout. This facility is operational for multiple choice type questions only. Deleting an Assessment (For reference) 1) In the Manage assessments window select Delete for the assessment you wish to delete. 2) A confirmation box appears, click Yes to permanently remove the assessment or No to keep the assessment . Editing an Assessment (For reference) NOTE: the questions used in an assessment cannot be edited once the assessment is complete. This option will only let you edit certain fields of the assessment. 1) In the Manage assessments window click Edit beside the assessment you wish to edit. 2) When you have finished editing the assessment, click Update to save the changes or click Reset and no changes will be made to the assessment. Exiting the Assessment Tool 1) To exit the assessment tool click the button as necessary to return to the main Queen’s Online: My applications page. Logging out You can logout of Queen’s Online by clicking on the Logout link under My Services in the left hand panel. Note: Always exit the system using the Logout link. Do not simply close the browser window. It is necessary to use the logout facility to maintain security.
