Dear Parents,
8/30/16
Welcome to a new session of Northshore Basketball Training. We are
excited to start a new session as well as get so many new players. Like to go
over what and how we do things and understand what we are trying to
accomplish with your child.
First you will notice our training sessions we are challenging our players to
get better personally on their own time. Putting a little pressure to improve by
themselves on their own time speaks to ownership of their development and
game. Our training sessions have more competition woven inside the training.
Somebody wins and somebody loses. Winners keep working and the ones that did
not win, train harder and more often to catch up. Everyone has different issues
and we will address them as such. Don’t judge how we treat one player versus
another, each player has a different development pattern. We as coaches talk to
each other as to what we see and how best to address the players issue. I am
not looking for them to love us, looking for them to work their butts off to
gain our respect.
Secondly we do not train our players to be the best teammates, we train
them to be independent, hard working, respectful, high IQ, tough, INDIVIDUAL
BASKETBALL PLAYERS. I don’t want my player listening or caring about what
a teammate has to say during a game who’s more interested in another sport,
works 5 months of the year on basketball, whose biggest victory was winning
the summer league at Pelican Park or Coquille, etc. They listen to us, we put in
the time, did the dirty work, we get the say so. Cause most likely the win
or loss will fall upon our shoulders. We train kids to carry the weight, inspire
their less than committed teammates, to go the extra yard cause it so matters
to them. In doing this we become good team mates and players coaches desire
and want. Not all of our players are the best but in the end they end up being
better than average people. Life is more than just basketball.
Had a few parents ask about Recreation ball. We are all for it. What we
would ask is that you talk to your rec. coach and let him know that you train
with us. Explain that you will continue to do so and make every practice you
can and all games for him but our training comes first. Most likely your child is
one of the top players in the league and the coach should be ok with that. Rec.
is good for your child’s confidence because training with us is difficult and our
players forget how good they are compared to regular players and friends.
Training with us they don’t see just how good they are getting because we have
better players than do the rec. departments. Secondly it is good exposure for
our business. Seeing your child play differently, acting differently, is great
advertising for us. I ask you to wear are the titan stuff you can while playing
rec. lol, you and your child are our greatest asset.
For Parents of players not making your school team. For whatever the
reason and there are many. I offer you this bit of wisdom that is as true as
anything you will have from a volunteer most often unqualified basketball coach
even in High School. It is this- IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT THE TOP 4-5
PLAYERS ON THE TEAM, YOUR ARE ACTUALLY BETTER OFF GETTING CUT
FROM THE TEAM AND CONTINUING TRAINING WITH US DURING THE
SCHOOL SEASON. FACT IS THAT UNLESS YOUR IN 9TH GRADE OR ABOVE
YOUR SCHOOL TEAM IS FOR FUN UNLESS YOU’RE THE TOP 4-5 PLAYERS
ON THE TEAM. FOR GIRLS YOU MUST BE THE TOP 2 OTHERWISE YOUR
BETTER WITH US TRAINING. UNDER 9TH GRADE COACHES CARE ABOUT AND
DEVELOP OR WORK WITH THE BEST PORTION OF THE TEAM THE SECOND
TIER gets little to no attention. We have had countless players get cut from
7th and 8th grade teams come back to us and train then make and play the
next year on the school team. Players develop at different times so one year
can mean a ton in terms of size, coordination, etc. Just a heads up and we can
talk more personally if you like on this when needed. Been there done this about
a thousand times.
For our new parents, the best way to get ahold of me is to text me. I
hate phone calls so texting is the best way to reach me. Other coaches, calls are
fine.
I want to thank all those who signed up for my shooting class, we filled
all 9 slots in 1 day and are moving forward. I will start our 3rd session in MidNovember. They go 6-7 weeks.
Pay Pal is close and will be a great help in our book keeping and making
sure everyone is current. When it is ready for use we will post in gym and on
line. No more checks. Thanks for your patience.
Lastly you will notice a flier in the hallway to the gym and fliers in the
flier slots by the water fountain. I am looking for sponsorships from family and
business community. Long story short I have 4 months from SeptemberDecember where school, other sports and High School Players drop off
dramatically which creates a huge hole when it comes to paying rent for facility.
My business model gets screwed mostly by high schoolers getting back to school
and their school teams. The better we train them the more we lose, a win lose
situation. The money we make from February thru July gets spent from SeptDec. and won’t cover it all. I have had some 1 million solutions to my issue over
the years and I appreciate all of them but I will not keep raising price, make
parents commit to half year payments up front, use gimmicks to squeeze to
additional monies from my parents, etc, etc, etc. Hell it kills me to charge our
parents game admittance to our gym. I know, I know, I know the monthly
payment is a bad business idea but it gives families flexibility, which is what is
really a killer for me. I don’t want to hold your child hostage like other sports
do. I don’t and wont. I am stupid that way, just ask my friends and wife. So if
you can help great it will be sincerely appreciated. There are 2 options to choose
from and your generosity will be dually noted in our gym.
SHIRTS- I have order forms and payment envelopes on wall in gym. I have
been asked for a while for Tee shirts and we have them now. I don’t do just
one color because like our program we are all different with different needs. I do
not see why we all need the same color shirt to show our support. We are
individuals. So we will be different at our games in the stands plus I just like
being different than everyone else. Will have hooded sweatshirts shortly.
We are still taking donations for flood victims and have secured a ton so
far. What officials are asking for is cleaning products mostly, clothing for the
most part is taken care of.
