Expectations of Coaches/Players/Parents

Expectations of Coaches/Players/Parents
EXPECTATIONS OF COACHES:
A. Always set a good example for players and parents to follow, exemplifying high moral and ethical
behavior. (In short—Be Christ-like!)
B. Instruct players in proper sportsmanship and practice responsibilities and demand that they
make sportsmanship and teamwork their #1 and #2 priorities.
C. Respect judgment of referees, abide by rules of the game and display no behavior that could incite
players or parents (ex. Questioning call, gestures, etc.).
D. Treat opposing coach, players and fans with respect. Shake hands with officials and opposing
coach before and after each game.
E. Develop and enforce penalties/ramifications for players who do not abide by sportsmanship and
practice standards.
F. Develop each player to his fullest potential giving candid feedback on strengths as well as
opportunities to improve.
G. Develop creative; structured and FUN practice plans for each session.
H. Practices will be planned and organized with particular focus on improving fundamentals.
I. Attendance records will be kept for practices and games, which will factor heavily towards playing
time, especially at higher levels.
J. Keep parents informed on practices, games, directions, etc.
EXPECTATIONS OF PLAYERS:
A. Accept seriously the responsibility and privilege of representing CHAAMP: display positive public
action at all times.
B. Demonstrate respect for opponents, coaches and referees before during and after games.
C. Live up to high standards of sportsmanship.
D. Treat opponents and teammates with respect: shake hands after games and take a knee quickly
when they are injured. Clap when they leave the court.
E. Respect judgment of referees, abide by rules of the games and display no behavior that could
incite fans (ex. Questioning calls, gestures, taunting, “show-boating” etc.)
F. Cooperate with referees, coaches and fellow participants to conduct a fair game.
G. Accept favorable and unfavorable decisions, as well as victory and defeat, with equal grace.
H. Come prepared each week to practice (ball, water, knee pads, court shoes etc.) and understand
that there will be ramifications for disruptive behavior-whether in practice or a game (ex.
Reduced playing time, sitting out practice, etc.).
I. Players will be students first and athletes second. Poor performance in school by their parents’
standard will result in discipline including but not limited to increased physical pain during
practice, game suspensions, and/or removal from the team.
EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS AND OTHER FANS:
A. Support the team and coaches
B. Respect decisions made by referees-do not speak to them.
C. Respect opposing fans, coaches and participants.
D. Fill out coach’s evaluation at end of season-this provides feedback to CHAAMP on how the coaches
are doing.
E. All parents are expected to volunteer at Home-hosted events. This is a must. It helps keep costs
way down, which benefits you!
F. Parents will not use athletics as a routine disciplinary tool realizing that the team is greater than
the individual. Parents realize that if a player misses games and especially practices for minor
infractions (such as a student not completing homework) then they are penalizing the team as an
unintended consequence.
G. Parents commit to the calendar for the entire sport specific season including the end of the year
tournaments. In the event of quitting on the team, with exception to injury or unforeseen
reasonable family situation, the family will be subject to full one-year waiting period before
membership may be restored.
Communications Parents Should Expect from the Coach:
Philosophy and goals of the program
Coach expectations for individual players and the team
Location and times of practices and games
Team rules and guidelines
Communications Coaches Should Expect from Players and Parents:
Concerns expressed directly to the Head Coach and Assistant Coach
Notification of any schedule conflicts in advance
Notification of illness or injury as soon as possible
Appropriate Concerns for Discussion with the Coaches:
The treatment of your child
Methods to help your child improve his/her skills
Concerns about a player’s behavior
Every effort will be made to unify the organization by handling potential disagreements, especially with
coaches, in a scriptural manner by approaching the offender directly in private. The subsequent step
would be to approach the Athletic Director to have a conversation. Finally, if necessary the next step
would be to approach the board in the grievance process as outlined in Section 4.11 of the CHAAMP
bylaws.
Issues Not Appropriate for Discussion with the Coaches:
While the coaches are committed to open communication with parents, there is a certain process that
should be observed. In particular, the time before and during a game is dedicated to the players. It is not
appropriate for a parent to approach a coach to discuss game or individual player concerns at this time.
The coach will be happy to set up a meeting/phone call to address parent concerns at a time that will not
interfere with the attention required by the players. An exception to this request is an incident when a
player is injured.
Grievances:
Any grievance of a member may be brought to the board’s attention through a written request. If
necessary a hearing will be convened in a timely fashion to hear the grievance and to determine a proper
course of action.
