Mar n Luther King Day
Martin Luther King Day is a United States federal holiday. It is
celebrated annually on the third Monday of January and is also known
as King Day or MLK Day. In some states it is also commonly referred
to as Civil Rights Day or Human Rights Day. In recent years it is
increasingly seen to be a 'Day of Service' when Americans are
encouraged to volunteer to help others less fortunate than themselves.
King was hugely influential in the American Civil Rights
Movement and was a major advocate of non-violent activism in the
struggle for the end of racial discrimination under US law. He was assassinated in 1968.
This federal holiday in King’s honor was created in 1983,
during the presidency of Ronald Reagan.

6 Alzheimer’s Topics
With the cold weather still in abundance, January is the perfect
month to celebrate and enjoy soup of all kinds.
From thick, creamy, calorie laden soup, to the water-based and
healthier broth, and the vegetable-laden chili and gazpacho, almost
every country around the world has it’s own special recipe.
It is thought that soup could trace back as far as the Neolithic
Age, with evidence suggesting that people who should have died out
through natural selection were kept alive
for a long time before the discovery of
Milk, which was later used to keep such
people alive. Soup seems the most likely
way to nourish these people – perhaps
a broth made of boiling water and meat.

Stay Warm on the Coldest Days
Weather Closings
The Krapohl Center will announce all weather related closing on
TV12 and TV25.
A general rule to remember: if you
do not have to get out when the roads are
snow covered and icy then don’t.
Stay Safe! Stay Warm!
Weather related
closing policy
You may have heard that layering is key - but did you know that
your base layer is the most important of all? It has the most effect on
your core body temperature. To keep you toasty, this layer should be
a close-fitting natural fiber - like silk, cashmere or thin wool. These
materials wick away perspiration to your outer layers of clothing so it
can evaporate without cooling you down. While cotton is a popular
choice, it can be your worst enemy. It absorbs moisture and traps it
against your body.
Compliment Day - January 24th
It is the policy of the Heart of Senior
Citizen Services to place the health, safety,
and welfare of the participants of the
Krapohl Center first and foremost. Therefore,
when weather conditions present a health or safety hazard such as large
snow falls or subzero weather the Krapohl Center will close. To encourage participants of the Krapohl Center to leave the safety and warmth
of their homes go out into the 15-20 degree below zero temperatures to
come to the center is to be irresponsible.
Older adults especially those on cardiovascular drugs,
antidepressants, and blood thinners are subject to frost bite and
hypothermia in just a matter of minutes. Frost bite can occur in the
amount of time it takes to scrape ice and snow off ones car or in the
amount of time it would take to warm up a car.
“Infants and the elderly are more likely to get hypothermia, and
may even get it indoors. The very young and very old use up energy
reserves quickly and are not as able to maintain an even temperature in
cold surroundings.” (Clinical Reference Systems)
However, in times
of power outages, please call the Krapohl Center. The center will open if
at all possible to provide a heating center for seniors to go to be out of
the cold.
Today is a great opportunity to say something positive
about the people you come into contact with. Everyone has good
attributes. ...that's right....... everyone.
Friends are friends because you see something good about
them. Here's an easy compliment to a friend: "Wow, you're very
intelligent...you choose your friends wisely".
It's more challenging to compliment your boss, or people
you don't like. Take up the challenge, and find a compliment for
them today, too.
Compliment Day is celebrated by offering sincere
compliments to people you know.


Just because you have Social Security or a small pension doesn’t
mean that you have to struggle to make ends meet! Even with a modest
income and assets, a person might still qualify for food and medical
assistance. For people age 60 and older, high medical expenses may
help you qualify. If your income is approximately $1,800 or less a
month, then it is likely you are eligible to receive some help.
