Imagine Every Kid Having the Opportunity to Play Sport
KIDSPORT WEEK TO HELP KIDS GET IN THE GAME
Vancouver, September 10 – Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon has declared the week of September 10th to
17th, KidSport Week in British Columbia and throughout the province, municipal governments are also jumping
on board to proclaim KidSport Week in their communities.
“The Government of B.C. is committed to helping all residents enjoy the benefit of sport, particularly those who
face barriers to participating at a young age. With more than $3.8 million provided to KidSport BC over the past
decade, we share KidSport’s pledge to ensuring every child has the opportunity to play an organized sport. By
proclaiming Sept. 10-17, 2016 as KidSport Week in British Columbia, we recognize the importance of sport in the
health and social development of children,” said Minister Peter Fassbender, Minister of Community, Sport and
Cultural Development.
“KidSport Week is designed to enhance the profile of KidSport across the province and to ensure that British
Columbians realize the importance of ensuring that all kids get the chance to play organized sport. Thanks to the
efforts of our incredible chapter volunteers, our corporate partners and the Government of BC, KidSport was able
to assist over 8,000 children to play a season of sport in 2015. We want to ensure that no child is left on the
sidelines in 2016”, said Pete Quevillon, Director KidSport BC.
“Without KidSport I would not have been able to experience the life lessons that I did from my sport and I would
not have become an Olympian because I would have missed out on some of the most crucial years of my
swimming career. I am eternally grateful for the generosity of others because if it was not for their donations I
would not be the person that I am today”, Richard Hortness (2x Olympic swimmer)
When 1 in 3 families can’t afford to register their children in sport, and only 7% of Canadian children and youth
meeting Canada’s guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity a day, KidSport hopes British Columbians will help us
to change those numbers.

About KidSport:
At KidSport™ we believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to
experience the positive benefits of organized sports. KidSport™ provides support to children in order to remove
financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.
There is nothing better for a child’s mental and physical growth than sport and physical activity. Their participation
helps them perform better in school, develop stronger social skills and build stronger and healthier bodies. It
allows them to develop healthy habits, self-esteem and leadership skills, creating a solid foundation for all of their
future accomplishments.
KidSport™ provides grant assistance to children 18 years and younger who are facing financial barriers preventing
them from taking part in organized sport. Grants average $300 and are dedicated to assisting with the costs of
organized sport registration fees. In 2015, KidSport provided over $1.8 million in grants to more than 8,100 kids.
