Applying Adult Education Principles in NSSK & NRP Training J. Devn Cornish, MD LDS Charities How Adults Learn Ears Mouth Hands Eyes How Adults Learn 1. Ears 4. Mouth 3. Hands 2. Eyes How Adults Learn =TELL =TEACH 4. Mouth 1. Ears 2. Eyes = SHOW 3. Hands = PRACTICE How Adults Learn If you want the learners to really change what they do: • First, TELL them • Second, SHOW them • Third, let them PRACTICE it • Fourth, help them TEACH it themselves An example from NSSK Concept: Effective bag and mask ventilation Adult education approach: • First, TELL about bag and mask use • Second, SHOW them on the mannequin • Third, let them PRACTICE it on the mannequin • Fourth, each learner TEACHES it to another, or learners take turns teaching the group Now, REINFORCE To REINFORCE the learning: • Ask the group, “What did s/he do well? • Ask the presenter, “What could you do even better next time?” • Ask the others, “Does anyone have any other suggestions?” • Allow the learner to repeat the PRACTICE Don’t miss the point It matters that you • First, invite the GROUP to compliment the presenter • Second, invite the presenter to critique him/herself • Then, invite the group to critique the presenter Because… • Everyone enjoys praise • It is easier to correct yourself than to be criticized by your peers • It is easier to accept correction from others if you have first invited it by correcting yourself EFFECTIVE TEACHERS NEVER MISS A CHANCE TO GIVE SINCERE PRAISE! If you want results… Don’t make excuses! Some teachers do not apply adult education principles because: • They don’t think about it • They think it will take more time • It sounds “childish” and unnecessary • They have no experience with it With just a little practice… You will find that applying adult education principles is: • Easy to do in most any setting • Takes effort and planning but not necessarily more time • Is much more enjoyable for learners • Is fun for the teacher (“You’re my favorite teacher!”) …AND IT WORKS!
