Social Enterprise: Winning with 2012
Social Enterprise: Winning with 2012 is a national project funded by the Office of the Third
Sector and is comprised of a partnership between Social Enterprise London (SEL) and Social
Enterprise Coalition (SEC). The project aims to optimise the involvement of social enterprises
across England in the development, delivery and legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games.
This project is about representing the voice of social enterprise nationwide to policy-makers
and procurers. We would like to know about social enterprises that are planning to bid for
Olympic contracts, what you have to offer, your experience of bidding for contracts, and
anything else that would allow us to give you a voice.
To get in touch, please contact Wan Saiful Wan Jan via email [email protected].

Events
Enterprise Events
As part of the Winning with 2012 project, we are organising a series of enterprise events
across the country. These events will offer organisations the opportunity to build business
partnerships / consortia as well as providing a forum for sharing best practice case studies
and emerging 2012 developments. These events will also be vehicles for consultation with
social enterprises.
To begin with, there will one event every month from December 2007 to April 2008. For
details of venue and date, please contact Nic Buckley ([email protected])
*Please let us know if there are other suitable events you want us to promote*
BAME Olympic Network
The Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Olympic Network is another key strand of the
project, promoting equality and diversity in the 2012 Games. This network will provide an
opportunity for BAME entrepreneurs to voice needs and priorities and exchange best practice.

FT (5/11/07): Olympics to bring £21bn to UK economy
Thousands of companies across the UK stand to benefit from a £21bn ($43.4bn) boost to the
economy provided by the 2012 Olympics, according to an estimate from Games sponsors
Lloyds TSB. But the bank warned that many small and medium-sized businesses could miss
out by failing to plan to capitalise on the London Games early enough. Click here to read

Social enterprise and the 2012 Games
SEL commissioned research to identify the potential role for social enterprises before, during
and after the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The findings were published in a report
entitled ‘The role of social enterprise in the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games’. The report revealed that social enterprises can deliver in the region of half a billion
pounds worth of goods and services before, during and after 2012. Click here to download the
report.
2012 and the local authorities
Many local authorities across the country have a dedicated officer working on deriving
benefits from the 2012 Games. Most of them are in the Local Government Association (LGA)
network on the 2012 Games. Further information of this network is available here. If you need
further information about this network and its members, please contact Laura Caton
([email protected])
Accessing the supply chain
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has stated that they are in the process of creating a
service to support SMEs accessing the supply chain. It is likely that this will be accessible on
London2012.com from early next year. We will keep you posted on the latest development.
Winning: A tourism strategy for 2012
DCMS published this document in September 2007, outlining a national tourism strategy. It
argues that the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games could generate an estimated
£2.1 billion in additional tourism benefits (2006 prices) for the UK over the period 2007-17.
The document also contains a timetable for action from 2008 to beyond 2012. Social
enterprises in the tourism and hospitality sector should gear up to benefit fully from this
opportunity. To access the document, click here.

Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy
WPNSA is a social enterprise based in Dorset. It was established in 1999 as a not-for-profit
company with three aims: to promote the sport of sailing at all levels of competence, to
include all people, especially those with difficulties; to provide a facility for the community to
use; and to contribute to substantial economic regeneration. Today, the Academy has an
annual turnover in excess of £1m and employs 12 full time staff, with local volunteers helping
to run larger events. At some events, there may be up to 60 volunteers, primarily taken from
the local community. The Academy operates on trading income and is financially sustainable.
The Sailing Academy is the only venue outside London that will host an entire event for the
2012 Olympic Games.
