1. What is a Sound Story?
 Definition- a story told through sound effects, instruments, and props
 Sound effects represent words from the story or characters in the story
 Can be taken from children’s books or literature such as “Jump, Frog, Jump”
 Can be developed from children’s literature or a story such as a children’s Bible Story
2. What musical concepts can be taught through sound stories?
 Timbre- the characteristic sound of a voice or instrument
 Expression- dynamics , emotion, and feeling
 Form- listening to and responding to same and different
 Rhythm- the patterns in music responding to long and short sounds
 Pitch- how high or low a sound is
3. How do I get started in creating a sound story?
 Determine the story
 Read the story for words that represent sound or sound effects
 Look for simple characters from the story that could be represented by instruments
 Sound Story Template Chart for developing a sound story outline
 Find props such as hats, scarves and streamers
 Find instruments or make ones that represent a variety of sounds
 Make sound or character cards to represent the various parts and sounds of the story
 Show examples

 Use the Sound Story Template to plan the story
 As a group demonstrate a sound story such as “Rap A Tap Tap”
 As a group demonstrate “Jump, Frog, Jump”
 Discuss musical concepts for each story
 Then divide into groups and create a sound story from a Bible Story
 Perform for the group
5. Let’s look at a sound story sample from the Fall 2017 Growing in Grace Curriculum
 Theme-Be Strong in the Lord
 Story is based on the wise man and the foolish man found Matthew 7: 24-27
