GEF International Waters Portfolio Learning Mechanism Andrea Merla GEF IW Learn, UNDP Diversions of water for irrigation, bulk supply, and potable use, together with the pollution of our shared water bodies are creating cross-border tensions. The GEF International Waters Focal Area was established to help countries work together to overcome these tensions in large transboundary water systems and share the benefits from them. In 20 years: an investment of 1.5 billion USD of GEF resources in over 200 projects. Many in river and lake basins. GEF IW LEARN a program that promotes experience sharing and learning among GEF International Waters projects not just a website IW LEARN 3 It includes: the achievement of increased awareness of GEF IW experiences and partnership with non-GEF interventions focus on transboundary surface and groundwater management just started, will last four years GEF IW Surface and Groundwater Communities of Practice This activity will respond to the special focus of IW LEARN 3 on integrated land and water management, and on groundwater, and involve the entire GEF portfolio of groundwater and river basins projects. Linking groundwater and surface water within a river basin context to set the basis for cooperative approaches and conjunctive management of surface and groundwater.
