IEEE Student Night
The annual IEEE Student
Night, held March 31 at Memorial University, was again a
great success. This annual
event is put off by the members
of the IEEE Student Branch to
recognize the graduating ECE
class as they present their final
term projects and get ready for
the next stage of their lives and
careers. The senior design projects are intended to allow students to demonstrate their
mastery of engineering design
and the breadth of technical
and non-technical skills required to bring a project to
completion. For the first time
this year the senior design projects were done in teams of two
to five students, who could be
a mix of Electrical Engineering
and Computer Engineering students. The level of achievement
demonstrated by these projects
was quite impressive.
At IEEE Student Night three
teams, who were selected
based on peer evaluation,
presented their projects and
were judged on the quality of
their presentations and projects. In addition all teams
were on hand to demonstrate
their projects. A reception followed, with award presentations.
The
IEEE
NL
Section
provides awards for the best
presentations and demonstrations. The recipients this year
were:
Though St. John’s played host
to the Canadian Conference on
Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) over a year
ago, it is only recently that business related to the conference
came to a close.
Technically,
CCECE 2009 had a strong contingent of papers and presentations.
The
conference
accepted
247
papers
for
presentation in eight mini-symposia. In addition to the paper
presentations, technical tours
were arranged of local technical points of interest.
Financially, CCECE 2009
was a great success, generat-
ing $45,000 in profit (split
between
Newfoundland-Labrador
Section
and
IEEE
Canada) and unmeasured business in and around the St.
John’s area. Over 230 participants registered for the conference,
and
many
more
attended the IEEE Canada
Board meeting and CHECE
meeting held with the conference. Some key supporters to
be thanked for this success include:

SWATH Surface Vehicle
The Faculty of Engineering
is always interested in new
project ideas, so if you have
any ideas that you think would
be suitable for future projects
please contact Dr. Dennis

IEEE Canada Regional Meeting
The IEEE Canada Board of Directors held its annual Spring
Meeting from 30 April to 2 May
2010 in Calgary – host city for
CCECE 2010. Lori Hogan and
Amy Hsiao represented the Section at the meeting. As well,
Gerard Dunphy attended the
meeting as IEEE Canada treasurer.
The meeting kicked off on
Friday with a full day of volunteer training. Also held on Friday were Area meetings (IEEE
Canada is comprised of three
geographic areas – East, Central, and West) and Group meetings (IEEE Canada has a
number of standing committees
and representatives for students, GOLD, life members,
publications, promotions, etc.).
Saturday meeting activities
included reports from each Sec-
tion and Group, and a Q&A session with the two nominees for
IEEE President-Elect, Gordon
Day and Joe Lillie. The IEEE
Canada budget was discussed,
noting the negative impact of
the rising Canadian dollar on
available funds. The Board dinner on Saturday night focused
on awards for Best Large and
Small Sections and banners to
Sections celebrating their 25th
and 50th anniversaries. Saturday’s dinner highlighted another important milestone –
Wally Read of the Newfoundland-Labrador
Section
and
IEEE Canada Director Emeriti,
celebrated his 80th birthday!
Meetings
concluded
on
Sunday with more formal discussions and motions. Approval was given to start the search
for a firm to redesign the IEEE
Canada website. New standing committees were formed,
including a History Committee
(for ECE-related history) and a
Teacher In-Service Program
Committee (for organization
and discussion of the TISP program).
It was decided that
CCECE 2012 will be hosted by
the Montreal Section, who bet
Quebec City and Canadian Atlantic (NS/PEI) for the honours.

Student Branch Update
This past semester, the MUN
student branch was once again
able to contribute support to
the Term 8 IEEE Student Night.
The evening provided student
branch members with the opportunity to meet representatives
from industry and to see the
hard work completed by the
Term 8 electrical and computer
engineering classes.
The convocation of the class
of 2010 introduced new members of the student branch executive.
The
new
executive
members are as follows:
Student Branch Chair Jonathan Howse
Vice Chair - Scott Stevenson
Treasurer - Bernard Ryan
Secretary - Mike O'Keefe
The new student branch executive is looking forward to
serving
the
IEEE
student
branch organization in the upcoming fall semester.

The Section held its annual
general meeting on November
30, 2009.
The meeting included reports from Section executive members related to
Section activities, finance, and
a final summary on the success
of CCECE 2009. Also at the
meeting, the 2010-2011 Section executive was confirmed.
The elected Section executive
members are:

In addition to Section business, Gerard Dunphy spoke on
a new initiative of the IEEE,
the Humanitarian Innovation
Challenge (HTC).
The HTC has brought knowledgeable people together to
identify, and work to solve,
some of the world's most
pressing challenges. Gerard
attended one of the working
sessions of the HTC group in

Scholarships and Awards
The Eastern Newfoundland Regional Science Fair was held at
the Marine Institute on March
26, 2010. This annual event
brings together over 500 Grade
7 to 12 science students in the
Eastern Newfoundland School
District. Once again the IEEENL section showed their support with a prize of $100 awarded to the best project related
to computer science or engineering
with
an
electrical
theme. Two IEEE members,
Adam Burry of Progress Software, and Amy Hsiao from Memorial
University
of
Newfoundland, participated as
judges, and the prize was awarded to Matthew Boychuck, a
Grade 10 student at Holy Spirit
High School, CBS, for his project
entitled
"Secrets
of
Stealth".
The section has also hon-
