INTRODUCTION
There are three types of
kicks in the sport of football;
punting, field goal kicking, and
kick offs. The proper techniques
for each type of kick is real
easy for anyone to learn even if
you are not a gifted football
athlete.
HOW TO PUNT
• Stand 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
• Catch the ball that the center snaps to you.
• Hold the ball out in front of you horizontally with
the laces pointing up.
• Take two steps forward beginning with your kicking
foot.
• Drop the ball towards your kicking foot and kick the
ball hard with the top of your foot.
• Follow through with your kicking leg.
HOW TO KICK A FIELD
GOAL
• Have a person kneel on the opposite side of the ball in which
•
•
•
•
•
you are running.
Place the football with the laces pointing forward away from you
standing straight on the ground.
The holder should place his index finger on the top of the ball
gently applying pressure to hold it in place.
Take three steps back and two steps to the left or the right
depending on your kicking leg.
Run up to the football starting with your non-kicking leg.
Plant your non-kicking leg about 1 foot to the side of the ball,
kicking the football with your kicking leg angling your kick
between the field goal.
HOW TO DO A KICK OFF
• Set a football on the tee angled slightly towards
you.
• Take three steps back and two steps to the left or
the right depending on your kicking leg.
• Run up to the football starting with your nonkicking leg.
• Kick the football with your kicking leg angling your
kick in the direction that you want the ball to
travel.
TIPS TO REMEMBER
• Weather conditions effect the way you kick; (Rain,
snow, wind, etc.) Versus a dome with a controlled
environment.
• Position kicking! Depending on where you are on
the field depends on where you kick the football.
• Learn how to block out distractions and handle
game pressure.
• Wear proper equipment. (cleats, pads, etc.)
COMMON MISTAKES
• Kicking with the point of their foot instead
of the side.
• Not stretching of exercising muscles
before kicking.
• Linemen not preventing defenders from
blocking a punt or field goal attempt.
• Kicking the ball out of bounds resulting in
penalties.
