at Christ the King Episcopal Church 1224 North Jefferson Street MAY, 2017 Huntington, Indiana 46750 A Few Words from Fr. Ted – HOLY SPACES It is April 22nd and Dianne’s and my second day in England; it's also our second day in London. After a bus tour of the city and viewing a portion of the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, we were on our own for the afternoon. We chose to spend it at Westminster Abbey, perhaps the most famous church in England and, in a sense, in the Anglican Communion (though those at Canterbury may argue that). It is a truly awe-inspiring edifice. Dating to at least the eighth century AD, some form of religious structure has been on this site for over 1200 years. It was the home of Benedictine monks and later the church of kings and queens. The building itself conveys beauty in its rich ornamentation and abundant statuary. It also displays its ancientness in worn stone and chipped wood. By far, most of what is highlighted on the audio self-guided tour narrated by Jeremy Irons are the many tombs of kings, queens, military heroes and other notables (we must not forget the famous authors enshrined in Poets Corner.) Dianne and I reflected that we both found ourselves liking the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. better. It seemed to us that too much of Westminster was dedicated to memorializing people of the past rather than providing a place for worship. Although a few people have been buried in the National Cathedral, all of its side chapels have been designed and used as places for Holy Communion and Daily Prayer. Westminster seemed more to us a monument than a church. But then we stayed as we had planned for Choral Evensong offered in the quire (in America choir or chancel). The service was familiar from Evening Prayer as found in our own Book of Common Prayer; the music offered by the Lay Vicars of the Abbey was astounding and the time was prayerful. I was then reminded of something I discovered many years ago in Israel. Many of the places I visited in that country were disputed as to their being the actual historical sites they were said to be. Did Jesus really change water into wine there? Is the Church of the Beatitudes really placed where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount? Was this really the site of the Nativity? Perhaps no more disputed is the location of the Resurrection. Protestants favor a place called the Garden Tomb; Catholics, Orthodox and Anglicans prefer the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. What I learned there is that it is not the historicity of the place but the prayers of the faithful offered there that make it holy. I was reminded of that at Evensong when I discovered the holiness of Westminster Abbey, and I was reminded that I am privileged to worship in a holy space each Sunday. Westminster, the Holy Land and Christ the King are holy 1 because prayer has been and is offered there. Let use dedicate ourselves to seeing that our little church stays as holy as those grand and glorious places. Blessings and we miss you all. Fr. Ted+ SENIOR WARDEN THOUGHTS -April showers bring May flowers. I will be looking for all the beautiful flowers in May! A big shout out to John & Sue Jepsen for organizing our Spring Clean Up, and to all those that showed up: Linda, Meg, Diann, Carmen, Kathy, Nancy and Bob. Even in the rain Bob and John were working outside. We got a lot done with all the helping hands. John Jepsen has done such a great job scheduling everyone for the new directory we have added another day. If you have not yet signed up, we will give you a call to sign you up. We would like to have everyone in our new directory. The dates for photography sessions Thursday, May 25th, and Friday May 26th, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. It never ceases to amaze me how this community at CTK comes together in a time of need. As most of you are aware from recent emails, Jeff and Lynn Roberts’ son-in-law, Sam, was hospitalized suddenly. He has a surgery on Tuesday scheduled to repair that tear in the "skin" around his brain. Please continue to keep Jeff, Lynn, Sam and Elyse in your prayers. Beth Ebersole Thank you so much to the Adult and Children's Choirs for all their hard work in April! The Children's Choir was a huge hit at Peabody Retirement Community on April 23rd. The combined choirs will be singing on May 14th. The Adult Choir will sing for Pentecost on June 4th. The Children's Choir will be singing on May 21st or May 28th (I need to confirm any holiday plans with them!) Children's choir practices continue to be after services on Sundays. However, the Adult choir practice times will change in May. The Adult choir will practice at 1:00 p.m. on May 7 and 21. There will not be Adult choir practice on May 14 or 28. Pulse Opera House in Warren presents Nunsense on the first three weekends in May. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Adult tickets are $15; tickets for children 12 and under are $5. Nunsense is the story of the Little Sisters of Hoboken who are putting on a fundraiser so that they can bury four sisters who came to an unfortunate end. There is a lot of laughter, fun and audience interaction. It is rumored that Sister Mary Steinway bears a strong resemblance to Sue Nunemaker..... BOOK CLUB 2 Our next meeting will be on Monday, May 15, at Linda Beatty’s home to discuss A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman. According to one Amazon reader, “… Ove is a man who wants to end it all, in a neat a tidy way of course, but he just can't seem to get the job done. Events and people of course conspire to keep him alive, until he finds his way back. A big thumbs up for a truly clever and fun story, with equally fun and clever characters.” Join us at Linda’s, 801 Bellingham Drive, at 7 p.m. for discussion and refreshments.
