ATTEND A NC E: You are expected to be in class on time daily and you are expected to remain in class until dismissed. I will no t d ro p anyon e for any reason; if you want to drop, you must do so officially yourself on or before Thu rs. , Jul y 2 2; if you just stop coming to class you will receive an F for the course. Every absence after the first 3 will result in the deduction of 5 points from your total number of points earned for the class. If you miss more than 30 minutes of class you are considered absent. 2 tardies (at the start of class or after brea) count as 1 absence. TIM E ALLO TM E NT: To get a C in this class, you should expect to spend a mini mu m of 20 hours we ekl y outside of class. Many of you may need more than 20 hrs a week to pass. HOM EWORK & CL ASSW ORK: Minimum (there is no maximum- practice as much as you need to master the material as much as you need to learn the material) HW assignments are given on the last page of the green sheet. If there are questions on these HW problems, we will go over as many as time permits each day. You are required to participate in all classwork. Classwork may be collected and graded and points will be added to your total grade. There may be an occasional quiz if graded will be added to you total points. EXA MS an d F IN AL: There will be a total of five 100 pt. exams (see calendar for tentative schedule). There will be no exam makeups under any circumstances for the first 5 exams, however I will drop your lowest grade (see FINAL GRADES.) EXA M EXTR A CREDIT: You may earn up to 3 EC points on any exam by making flash cards on 3x5 cards for the sections covered on each of the 5 hour exams. 6 cards must be completed for each point and they must be contained (but not in a spiral binding). They will be turned in at the beginning of each exam and will be graded by correct section, format and number of cards. FORMA T: FRONT SID E:. In the up p er right corn er write the chapter & section in which the concept appears (such as 4.4 or B.2) . In the center write the word or concept to be learned or a question . BACK: Write an explanation and give an example. The final exam is comprehensive and will count as 2 one-hour exams. Only under extreme circumstances, and with documentation, will a makeup final be given. There will be no flash cards for the final. FINAL GRA D ES: You will have a total of seven 100 pt scores: 5 hour exams and two 100 pt final exam scores. I will drop your lowest 100 point score. If your lowest grade is your final exam, it will count as one exam rather than as two. Then I will add up any HW/CW points earned and add them to your other points. Your final grade will be a percentage of points earned out of points possible. A+ = 98-100% A = 92-97 A- = 90-91 B+ = 87-89% B = 82-86 B- =80-81 C+ = 77-79% C = 68 - 76 C- (none) D+ = 65-67% D = 60-65% D- = 55-59% F = below 55% I will not keep a running tab of your grade for you; that is your job. Keep all your work and record your points on a separate sheet of paper. If you need help, I would be happy to help you in my office hours. INC O MPL ETES : I do not give incompletes nor do I sign petitions after the last day to drop except for welldocumented emergencies. So if you plan to drop the class, do not wit until it is too late! RECOMMENDATIONS for GETTING H ELP: • • • Form study groups; working in group is more fun, less frustrating and has be seen shown in study after study to be the most successful approach to learning mathematics for every level of competency. If you are having difficulties, make an appointment with me. There is a FRE E tutorial center for math students in S43. If you come in early in the quarter, you can schedule a regular weekly session. Otherwise there is always a drop-in tutor available but you may have to wait your turn. • Trade phone numbers and/or e-mail addresses with several people in class. You are responsible for all assignments on time even if you are absent. WARNINGS: • You will no t get full credit on an y work for ans w ers alon e!
