GAMBLING ACT 2005 SMALL SOCIETY LOTTERIES
GUIDANCE NOTES FOR GROUPS HOLDING A LOTTERY UNDER THE LICENCE OF
VOLUNTARY GROUPS - EAST SUTHERLAND
Notification of intention to hold a lottery must be made in writing to VG-ES, Alba, Main Street, Golspie,
KW10 6TG before tickets are printed.
The following conditions must be adhered to under the Lotteries Act 1976:
a)
The Organisation must be a member of Voluntary Groups - East Sutherland.
b)
The Promoter must be named as “The Chairman of VG-ES”; address: Alba, Main Street,
Golspie, Sutherland, KW10 6TG.
c)
No prize must exceed £25,000.
d)
The maximum global amount that can be deducted for expenses and prizes is 80%, with a
minimum of 20% going to the purposes of the Society.
e)
The price of each ticket shall be the same and stated on the ticket.
f)
The total value of the tickets sold must not exceed £20,000.
g)
Every ticket must specify the name of the licence holder, i.e. VG-ES, the name of the Society, name
and address of promoter, name of the registration authority, i.e. Highland Council and the place and
date on which the determination of the prize winners will take place. (Please refer to the sample
ticket enclosed for further details).
h)
No ticket to be sold to or by anyone under 16 years of age.
i)
No ticket to be sold in a street, where street includes any bridge, road, lane, footway, subway, square, court or passage. Tickets may be sold from a kiosk in a shop, or door-to-door.
j)
A PRINTED TICKET SHOULD BE SENT TO VG-ES, ALBA, MAIN STREET, GOLSPIE,
KW10 6TG BEFORE ANY ARE SOLD.
Any breach of the above conditions is deemed to be an offence.
The Society using the VG-ES Small Society Lotteries Licence must make a Return, certified by two other
members of the Society. The Return must be given to VG-ES not later than the end of the third month after
the date of the lottery. It will then be forwarded to Highland Council by us. Failure to make a Return or
making a false Return is an offence which is punishable by a fine. In this eventuality, any sum charged on
us shall be recoverable from your organisation.
