Mr Arun Prasad a 2011 batch student presented a paper on “An uncommon breast lesion –a clinical
dilemma” at Empower ’13 – International conference held in Stanley Medical College, Chennai. Along
with Ms Kukku Leopold, he has also submitted a paper on “Omental infarction- an uncommon cause of
acute abdomen”[under the guidance of Dr.Magdalene,Dr Robin and Dr Veena] to the Saudi surgical
Journal which was accepted by them for publishing.Great steps by SNIMSians worth emulating.
Tiji Thankachan of 2010 batch won the award for excellence in social service amongst students
instituted by Shambu Balasubramanyam Memorial Trust in August 2012 . The prize was awarded
on 21st August 2012.
In November 2012, Kerala University of Health Sciences, conducted its first “ Arts fest” in Ahalya
Ayurvedic Medical College. It was conducted over 3 days 19th , 20th & 21st Nov.2012.
The Students of SNIMS actively participated in Essay Writing, General Quiz , Painting , Violin ,
Bharatanatyam, Folk Dance , Group Dance, Mohiniyattom, Kuchipuuddi, Group dance, Percussion

a) An Orientation programme conducted for the ASHA workers and Kudumbasree volunteers
at Kunnukara Panchayath Hall at 2.00pm on 10-08-2011. From the panchayath 71 persons
in total participated in this programme. From the feedback we got from the workers, the
programme was useful for them.
b) Orientation programme for ASHA workers and Kudumbasree volunteers conducted at
Nedumbassery Panchayath hall at 11.00am on 22-08-2011. Total 98 members participated.
c) Orientation programme for ASHA workers and Kudumbasree volunteers conducted at
Parakadavu Grama Panchayath hall at 2.00pm on 25-08-2011. 91 members participated.

e) A health checkup and education programme were conducted for the Primary school children
in Govt. L.P. School, Manjaly with III year MBBS students on 13.10.2011.
f) A health checkup programme was conducted for the students for Junior Basic School,
Kunnukara from 10 to 12 noon on 11-10-2011 with the Vth semester MBBS students. 119
students were examined.
g) Conducted a Health Education class in Govt. L.P. School, Chalakka from 2 to 4 pm on 12-102011. About 30 parents and 75 students attended the programme. Dr. P. Gopalakrishnan
and Mr. Satheesh Chandran conducted the class on water borne diseases, Leptospirosis and
its control.
h) Conducted a Health Education class on water borne diseases, Leptospirosis, mosquito
proliferation and its control for the students on 13-10-2011. The P.T.A President, teachers
and 160 students participated. . A community education programme on prevention of
Diabetes was conducted in Anganwadi No.16, Chalakka at 2.30pm on 11-11-2011.
i)A Diabetic detection, education and treatment programme was conducted in our Hospital on
14-11-2011. In this camp 66 patients participated. Mr. K.P. Dhanapaln M.P inaugurated the

j) A Health awareness and familiarization programme for the Medical students was conducted
on 17-11-2011 in Parakadavu Block Panchayath taking one batch of students to that institution.

Munambam in the forenoon on 26-12-2011. Dr. Saritha Susan Varghese, Mr. Satheesh

a class on general health and hygiene and also on parameters of Health to NSS volunteers in

On 01-02-2012 afternoon classes were arranged to discuss details regarding spread of Leprosy,
removal of stigma and discrimination in Leprosy for the Community at Munambam, our rural

On 02.02.2012 the topic for the clinical discussion for our faculty members at SNIMS was Leprosy
prevention. Many faculty members and others actively participated in the discussion and

On 03.02.2012 classes on Prevention of stigma and discrimination in Leprosy was arranged at St.

Short report of observation of Doctors’ Day - July 1st .
Doctors day was observed at SNIMS at 3pm on 1st July 2013 at lecture hall No:3 . In
connection with this a popular doctor contest was organized and popular doctors were
selected from preclinical, paraclinical. clinical & overall by students and one popular
doctor was selected by staff members.
Function started by prayer by students .Principal Commodore Dr. M.J John welcomed
the gathering. In his address he mentioned the history of starting doctors whole over
the world and in INDIA. He mentioned that this observance fulfills a need to show
doctors and physicians in our lives how important they are to us and how invaluable
their treatments are that cure us. The celebrations are indicative of respect they
command in the life of their patients and thus obligate them to fulfill their
responsibilities as well.
Dr. N Madhu former president PTA inaugurated the function. In his inaugural address
he informed that the celebrations are indicative of the respect that the patients and
families give to the doctors. He informed that that all of us take today’s function as an
eye opener to us who have been stuck by a failing career owing to lack of
commitment. Let us rededicate over selves, commit over selves to serve the humanity.

A meeting was conducted at SNIMS to inaugurate the K-SAS project (Kunnukara
Samagra Arogya Samrakshana Paddhathi) at 3 pm on 15th June 2013. Sri. P.
Rajendraprasad, President of Gurudeva Charitable Trust presided over the
function, Shri V K Ebrahim Kunju Hon.Minister inaugurated the function and the
project and Shri KD Venugopal Secretary GCT gave the key note address.

and Vice Principal lighted the lamp.
Commodore Dr. M.J. John welcomed the gathering. In his welcome address,
special mention was made on the magnanimity of GCT President, Secretary and

In the Presidential address , Shri P Rajendra Prasad ,President GCT gave a jist of
recent survey conducted by the college in the Kunnukara Panchayath.He
congratulated the Honourable Minister for the speedy and successful
implementation of public works activities in the State.
He mentioned that in ward number 11 of Kunnukara Panchayath, there were
about 111 patients with Hypertension , 70 patients with Diabetes,3 cases of
Cancer ,122 with defective vision and about 12 with Heart diseases. He informed
that the project is appropriate to the time to improve the health of Kunnukara
Community.He gave special mention about two important projects – 1) To make
Kunnukara Panchayath a cataract free area.
2)To make Kunnukara a dog bite free Panchayath.
He happily mentioned that GCT is willing to help for the successful
implementation of the project .He also appreciated the efforts taken by the

Sri. V.K. Ibrahim kunju, Hon. Minister for Public Works, Kerala
inaugurated the project. He stressed the importance of waste management in
the community .Health problems he said, is mainly due to the defective
lifestyle ,inadequate drinking water and improper waste management .A
cooperative and coordinated approach by all concerned is the only answer
to these problems.The pivotal role of individual and the family need no
emphasis. He promised to provide all help to improve the health of
community and for the smooth running of the college. He appreciated the
efforts and the timely intervention programs taken by GCT , college
authorities and department of Community Medicine .
Sri. K. D. Venugopal, Secretary, G.C.T. delivered the key note address. In his
address he emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and shared
his ideas in making Kunnukara a Green Panchayath utilizing the expertise and
competencies of medical college of GCT.
He added to have proper waste management, rain water harvesting, supply of safe
potable drinking water, utilization of solar energy , establishment of biogas plants
etc to make Kunnukra self sustaining and to keep the diseases and disorders at
the elimination level. For this he sought the cooperation of Government,
Panchayath and Health centre to join hands with the Medical college.

REPORT ON CME PROGRAM IN LEPROSY CONDUCTED AT SREE NARAYANA INSTITUTE OF
MEDICAL SCIENCES, CHALAKKA.
A Continuing Medical Education Program on Leprosy was conducted at this college on
6.9.2013 under the joint auspicious of departments of Dermatology, Community Medicine
and Medical Education & Technology Unit. An Organizing committee was constituted for
the smooth conduct of the program with the following members. Total 60 Doctors

. The Principal stressed the importance of CME on leprosy and added that the cases of leprosy are on
the increase in Kerala. He also mentioned that this CME will give an opportunity for the faculty
members to discuss with specialists in leprosy who have vast experience in managing leprosy and
wished all success for the CME . In continuation to the inauguration Dr. Dharmaratnam, HOD,
Dermatology gave an introductory talk on leprosy.
The first session started at 8.50 AM.
Dr. Dharamaratnam and Dr. Tommy Varghese, Medical Superintendent, chaired the
session. Dr. Anoop Sinha, Associate Professor, Dept. of Microbiology presented a topic on
“introduction to leprosy and lab. diagnosis”. He explained in detail various methods of
laboratory diagnosis on leprosy.

Session 2 was chaired by Dr. Sumangala, HOD, Dept. of Pathology.
Dr. Magdalin, Professor of Pathology explained in detail various aspects of pathology and
pathogenesis’ of leprosy. Doubts were clarified immediately after the session.
After tea break, Dr. Raju Antony, HOD, Dept. of Community Medicine chaired the next
session on” the role of BCC in elimination of leprosy”.
Dr. Saritha Susan Varghese explained various aspects of communication with special
emphasis on behavioral change. She said, though there are plenty of opportunity for health
education, and there are experts who give health education using various improvised and
modern methods, what is lacking is behavioural change. The need is to have sustained and
committed efforts for behavioural change in the people. Only then we can achieve the
expected results. Dr. Raju Antony quoted many examples to have effective communication,
so as to have behavioral changes faster and better.
The next session was on “diagnosis and management of leprosy”. Prof. Dr. Ambika bai
chaired the session. Prof. Dr. Sadeep and Prof. Dr. Sobhana Kumari, Dept. of Dermatology,
Medical college, Kottayam gave detailed discussion on the topic. They gave a mention
about stigma attached to leprosy which is making diagnosis and management difficult.
Dr. Ambika bai informed that unless the family and community fully accept the leprosy
patients, elimination of leprosy will continue as a mirage. Therefore the present need is to
have coordinated, cooperative, continuous and committed efforts to maintain leprosy in
the elimination stage.
Next sessions were on leprosy along with other diseases.
Prof. Dr. Mohanan K.R., HOD Dept. of Orthopedics SNIMS chaired the session on “leprosy and
systemic diseases”. Prof. Dr. N.L. Sarma and Prof. Dr. Ganapathi Rao explained various aspects of
leprosy and several systemic diseases. They also mentioned about liver and bone changes in
leprosy. Several doubts were clarified. This session was prolonged up to 1.45 PM as there were
many doubts raised by participants.
After lunch break, the next session started by 2.30 PM on the topic “Neuritis and surgical
aspects of leprosy”. Prof. Dr. Satish G. Prabhu chaired the session.
The speakers were Prof. Dr. Anandakumar, HOD, Neurology and Prof. Dr. Gopalakrishnan,
HOD, Surgery from Amritha Institute of Medical sciences, Kochi. They explained various
surgical and neurological aspects of leprosy. Dr. Satish Prabhu also added various surgical
aspects of leprosy.
The next session was on “Drugs in leprosy and therapeutics” which was chaired by Dr. K.V.
Nataraja, Professor of Pharmacology, SNIMS and Dr. Naveen, Asst. Professor of
Pharmacology, SNIMS gave the talk on the subject.
The session was on “relapse, re-infection and reactivation of leprosy”. Dr. Dharmaratnam chaired
the session.
The speakers were Dr. Vineetha Varghese Associate Professor, dept. of Dermatology, and Dr.

The last session on” “Stigma & discrimination and current status of leprosy” was chaired by Dr.
Haseena Mohammed, District Medical Officer, Ernakulam and Dr. Raju Antony, HOD, Community
Medicine, SNIMS.
The speakers were Dr. Dalia V.S. Deputy D.M.O. Ernakulam and Dr. P. Gopalakrishnan, Associate
Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, SNIMS. Dr. Dalia talked on stigma attached to leprosy in
which she highlighted the importance of the activities to remove stigma in the community for better
treatment compliance and eradication of leprosy.
Dr. Gopalakrishnan talked on present status of leprosy globally, nationally and locally and
mentioned about the increase of cases during the year 2012 compared to the status during the
preceding ten years.
In the concluding session, Dr.M.J. John, Principal congratulated the organizing team for
their untiring efforts with which the CME was well conducted.He thanked the
chairpersons, speakers and participants. The Principal also appreciated the efforts made by
the departments of Dermatology, Community Medicine and the Medical Education unit of
this college.
Dr.Raju Antony, HOD Dept. of community medicine thanked all those have participated and helped
for the smooth conduct of the programme. He added that he is grateful to the G.C.T. team for the
help and guidance given to make the CME a reality. He thanked again all the participants,
chairpersons, speakers and all those who helped to plan and conduct the CME.
De Addiction Ward and Workshop
The disturbing scenario prevailing in our neighbourhood of rampant alcoholism was taken
into consideration thus leading to the birth of the conceptualized Deaddiction package and
ward. Differing from the usual treatment of substance abuse, a three week schedule is
introduced and a separate 15 bedded ward was started for the same. Drawing in on the
excellent training he received at St John’s Bangalore and the work experience at NIMHANS,
he has designed a target oriented program for these patients. After a week of acute
management the patients are transferred to the specially designed ward, where he is ably
assisted by the Clinical Psychologists and social workers. Realising the fact that prolonged
social support is required to keep these patients away from the temptations of this evil
menace, the support of the social organizations was ensured As part of the drive to enlist
the support of social organizations, a workshop for the office bearers of various branches
of SNDP Union of Parur was conducted on the 26th of October. The workshop, attended by
35 participants was inaugurated by Dr Prabhakaran Nair and the topic was ably presented
by Dr Anoop Vincent. The next Workshop is scheduled for the month of December.
An anti ragging awareness programme was conducted at Sree Narayana Institute of
Medical Sciences, Chalakka under the auspices of N.Paravur Legal Services Committee on
Monday 30th September 2013. The Chief Guest, Additional District Judge of N. Paravur Sri.
P.S. Antony inaugurated the programme. The function was presided over by the Principal
of SNIMS Commodore Dr. M.J.John. Additional Govt. Pleader Sri.A.J.R.Varghese gave a
felicitation speech. Vice Principal of SNIMS, Dr. Madhavi Ramachandran welcomed the
gathering and Dr. Sasidharan, Deputy Medical Superintendent proposed the vote of thanks.
Two batches of medical students and the faculty and other staff of SNIMS participated in the
campaign. The inaugural function was followed by a class for the students by Advocate Ayub
Khan who went into all the legal aspects and consequences of ragging. A representative from
the student body expressed their appreciation and thanks to Advocate Ayub Khan.
Mr. Subin S 2010 batch won the award for excellence in social service amongst students
instituted by Shambu Balasubramanyam Memorial Trust in 2013
Election of Students Council conducted by KUHS was held on 5th October 2013. All
the members were nominated and hence there was no elections.
Administrative Meeting in the Presence of President and Secretary GCT were held on
1st November 2013.
College Union “ Nimantra13” Inauguration was held on 7th November 2013. During
this event a gift was handed over to Ms. Aparna Padmanabhan by Sunny Diamonds
for the topper of the academics.
Kerala University of Health Sciences invited Principal for the inaugural function of
AIU South Zone Vice Chancellors’ Conference . Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala. Shri
Oommen Chandy has graciously inaugurated the conference on 12. 11.2013 at
10.00 am . Our Principal Commodore Dr. M.J John attended the conference.
Observance of World Diabetes Day2013 and Wellness center Inauguration
Diabetes Education and prevention WAS HELD ON 14TH November 2013
Free investigations for patients and free medicines for 100 patients for one year are the highlights of our Diabetic
Day. The function in association will be inaugurated on 14th November 2013 at 9.am by Smt. Valsala
Prasannakumar, General Secretary of KPCC and Municipal Chairperson Parur. Along with this function the formal
inauguration of the Wellness Clinic will be done By Dr. Haseena Muhammed, DMO of Ernakulam. Wellness clinic
is a joint venture between the hospital and the department of Community Medicine, where routine screening of
patients for parameters of Obesity and will be managed in the departments of dietetics, medicine and surgery.
Arthritis awareness Programme was celebrated on 16th November 2013.
The Kerala University of Health Sciences organized a workshop for Medical teachers under
this University on ‘How to conduct Inspection” on 15/11/2013. The work shop
was
attended by four faculty of our Institution. on 15/11/2013.

Sports activities, University volley ball competition
KUHS had entrusted us with the conduct of Central zone Volley ball competition of the
University. Although there were 35 teams from various colleges to take part, finally only 10 colleges
took part.
The event was inaugurated on 18th November 2013. Volley ball champions of India, c. Gopinath IPS,
IG Police of Thrissur range , Superintendent of Customs, Cochin, Moideen Naina and Dean of KUHS
Dr. Sudhikumar were special guests at the inaugural match .Mr Naina, who was the former Indian
Volley ball Team captain, served the first ball and started the match series.
The matches were enthusiastically enjoyed by our students. Our team and the team of Cochin
cooperative medical college team played semi final and our team win . The finals were played
between our team and Alleppy medical college team and SNIMS got the championship trophy.
