Donor Support Moving USD Onward
By Nancy and Tom Gallagher
Co-chairs, Onward: The Campaign for South Dakota
The October 2014 campaign total
was $135 million.
Today, Onward: The Campaign for
South Dakota has raised more than
$200 million!
As we look back over the last four years of USD’s $250
million Onward: The Campaign for South Dakota, the first
thing that comes to mind is: How remarkable the USD
community is!
How remarkable President Abbott has been—his
leadership and vision for the university have been
transformational. How remarkable the students are — they
inspire all of us with their enthusiasm and love for the U.
How remarkable our alums and other friends of USD have
been—their generosity is pushing the Onward campaign ever
closer to its goal.
Here are some of the remarkable results:
• 13,000 alumni and friends have touched the lives of USD
students and faculty through the power of philanthropy.
• For more than 3,500 of those 13,000 donors, that
commitment to the Onward campaign is their first gift
to the university.
• Together those 13,000 donors bring the Onward
campaign total to $200 million of the $250 million
goal — with the new Sports Enhancement Complex
(basketball/volleyball arena, track and soccer facilities)
for athletics and the departments of physical therapy,
occupational therapy, kinesiology and sports sciences
already nearing completion.
Scholarships, student and faculty enrichment funds,
endowed chairs and professorships and facilities are the pillars
of the Onward campaign, but it is the student body that is
the core, the purpose, the focus of all we do. Please know the
students appreciate your investment and benefit each day from
the change you made possible.
Think of it: 13,000 donors! Every gift merits thanks—
every gift impacts the students—every gift moves the
university Onward. Many donors provided leadership
gifts, and their names are listed on the opposite page. Your
generosity shows that you recognize the need of the university
to attract the best and brightest students.
We invite all who have enjoyed the experience of higher
education to take an active role. While reaching the quarter
of a billion dollar goal has—and will—require continued
dedication and support, the University of South Dakota
Foundation is committed to moving USD Onward!

INSPIRING
PASSION,
SUPPORT
The University of South Dakota will help shape the future of more
than 10,000 students this year alone. It could be a class, a professor
or activity that challenges an individual to think, to act, to do—and
alters the course of a life. That is the power of a liberal arts university.
Volunteer leaders of USD’s $250 million Onward: The Campaign
for South Dakota reflect on its impact on individuals and the university.
Lorraine Hart
My education at USD unlocked so many
opportunities for me—a wonderful
career and a wonderful life. I want to
help provide the opportunities I found
at USD to students today and in the
future. As public funding for higher
education decreases, it is alumni,
corporations and foundations that will
keep and expand higher educational
opportunities for students.
Doyle Knudson
Serving on the USD Foundation Board
was a great inspiration and motivation
for supporting the Onward campaign.
Understanding the needs and thinking
back on the great experience I had at
USD definitely inspired me to participate
both personally and financially. It is our
opportunity as alumni and friends to give
back to our great university.
Dan Kelly
My support of this campaign is fueled
by a desire to create the opportunity
for today’s students to have the same
experiences I had in the 1960s when
I received an athletic scholarship.
Scholarships remain among the most
important considerations in 2016, as
70 percent of students receive them at our
flagship university. I encourage everyone
who had a positive educational and social
experience at USD to consider paying it
forward to aid the students of today and
tomorrow, so they can have the same
positive experience.
Tom and Cindy Lillibridge
Inclusion of the National Music
Museum’s capital campaign as part
of the Onward campaign has prompted
our involvement in fundraising for
USD. The preservation and display of
the world’s premier collection of musical
instruments that resides on the USD
campus deserves enthusiastic support.
Mary Jo Kelly
Seeing how well the university is run
financially and getting to know our
president, many of the deans/professors/
coaches, and some of the enthusiastic
students has made coming back to visit
USD a real pleasure. This all makes
financial support very worthwhile;
it’s our opportunity to give back.
Jeff Nelson
One common factor that all of us share
and can be proud of is the ongoing success
of the young athletes who represent USD.
For many of us, USD was the start of our
adult lives, careers and families. Renewing
commitment to our school is an easy
decision after all that USD has brought to
our lives. Each of us must decide how we
give and what we give, but as you think
of the major impacts of your life, please
remember what USD has meant and
provided to you.
Mission
The University of South Dakota Foundation
provides private resources for the University
of South Dakota to increase the excellence of
students’ educational experience.
Onward: The Campaign for South Dakota will help the University of South Dakota advance
its priorities for students, faculty, programs and facilities through scholarships,
student and faculty enrichment funds, endowed chairs and professorships, and facilities.
