Objectives
• To appreciate change management strategy
through examining the leadership issues and
staff reactions in this regard, via your group
research on one particular change
management programme inside HSBC
• To understand how to draft the assignment
report on change management
The assignment task
• A learning portfolio of 3 parts
– PART 1: A research report with a word limit of 1,500 on one HSBC
change program that has been introduced/implemented after 1993
– PART 2: An academic report of a 2000 word limit to evaluate the
implementation and resistance of such change management from
one of the three stakeholders’ point of view: management team,
employees and the general public
– PART 3: Seminar-based portfolio evidences . An integral part of this
module learning, three documents need to be produced throughout
the semester to help you learn and prepare for this assessment.
PART 1
• A research report with a word limit of 1,500
on a HSBC change program (after 1993)

Part 1: Research report
You need to find the following information:
•
Internal and external contextual factors which influenced the introduction of
strategic changes.
•
An evaluation of the nature of these strategic changes, detailing the actual
changes that went ahead in the specific HSBC context.
•
An outline of the change management strategy used to execute these strategic
changes.
•
The challenges and difficulties experienced by the management team in
implementing such a change strategy e.g. resistance and problems to change;
strategic commitment of diverse stakeholders to make the change possible; etc.
Part 1: Research report
You need to structure Part 1 in the following manner:
1. Title

3. Change management in HSBC (either in the HQ, at a sub unit, or a particular
department)
3.1. Internal and external contextual factors which influenced the
introduction of strategic changes.
3.2. An evaluation of the nature of these strategic changes, detailing the
actual changes which went ahead.

strategic changes.
3.4. The challenges and difficulties experienced by the management team in
managing these changes.

Given your stakeholder viewpoint, this report needs to clearly identify a range of
appropriate texts on:
– The core issues about strategic changes and change management strategy ,
this should be outlined against appropriate theoretical frameworks or
conceptual discussion.
– Specific concerns and problems that you anticipated from a particular
stakeholder’s point of view.
– Advised approaches for overcoming resistance to change, dealing with your
own (stakeholders) and other's anxieties, and effectively winning support for a
management of change strategy and programme of implementation.

your topic.
• Describe how a range of relevant and up-todate literature has been evaluated to provide
a concise summary (fully referenced) of a
select number of challenges on change
management in that situation.

Part 2: Academic report
• Main text 2 – examination
– You are required to critically evaluate, compare
and contrast the reality of undertaking change
within organisations - with all its difficulties,
disappointments and set-backs.
– Evaluate the positive and negative aspects of the
change approaches, methods and leadership
strategy/approaches demonstrated in your
chosen case studies and the ‘qualities’ of change
leadership/effective leadership skills used in
practice.

– Along with your advised approaches for
overcoming resistance to change, dealing with your
own and other's anxieties, and effectively winning
support for a management of change strategy and
programme of implementation for development.

for improving change management and change
leadership approaches,
– Methods and skills that are productive in future
organisational change situations.

As integral parts of this module learning, three documents need to be produced
throughout the semester to help you learn and prepare for this assessment. They
are to be attached as appendixes in this part:

Please note that there is in general no maximum word limit applies to your
personal and research notes, yet it is expected that each evidence shall be of at
least 1 A4 page, word processed.
•
All the above portfolio evidences need to be completed before on the week
specified, and submitted to the blackboard site ( per Tutor’s guidance) as they
need to be acknowledged by your seminar tutor in the respective seminar weeks.
Learning evidences will be electronically dated (hence could not be backdated)
and have to be completed for submission as required.
•
Incomplete portfolio evidences will seriously compromise your overall mark for
this module, although they do not carry individual weight per se.
