RE: Hearing Aid Coverage for Children in Georgia
Dear Senator INSERT LAST NAME,
As a constituent in your district, I am writing to let you know about an issue that affects
children with hearing loss in our community. I am requesting a meeting with you to
discuss this issue.
<INSERT YOUR STORY, MAKE IT PERSONAL. YOU CAN MENTION THE
DIFFERENCE YOU HAVE SEEN HEARING TECHNOLOGY MAKE IN A CHILD’S
LIFE, YOUR OR A FAMILY MEMBERS DIFFICULTY IN GETTING AIDS, OR
SIMPLY YOUR PASSION FOR THIS ISSUE>
Today in Georgia, insurance companies are not required to cover the cost of children’s
hearing aids and as a result many children are not getting the technology they need to
help them hear. Hearing aids can cost as much as $6,000 per pair and they have to be
replaced every 3-5 years. Families that qualify for Medicaid receive coverage for hearing
aids, but there are many families who do not qualify yet still cannot afford the high cost
for this technology, which their children so desperately need.
Children can start wearing hearing aids as young as 3 weeks old, and those that do not get
them can experience significant language delays. As parents, we understand that
investing in the early years of a child’s life saves the taxpayers money in the future.
When children’s hearing needs are not addressed, special education for a child with
hearing loss can cost schools an additional $420,000. Twenty other states have passed
legislation requiring private insurance companies to cover the cost of children’s hearing

aids. I am asking for your help to make sure that Georgia’s hard of hearing children do
not fall behind.
Please consider sponsoring and/or supporting legislation that would require insurance
companies to cover the cost of hearing aids for children.
