Name: _____________________________________________
Date: _______
Anthony is the manager of a local sports club. Every day he checks to see how many
people are there playing basketball. They have ten basketball courts.
(F-IF.7a/Claim1)
1. The first day, Anthony sees 8 people are already there playing
basketball. Over the next few days he notices that each person
had brought two more friends with them.
 Create and label a discrete graph to show the number of
people playing basketball over the first seven days.
 Find the rate of growth of people playing basketball
and write in the area underneath the graph.
4000
2000
2. When the courts are full they will not let any more people in to play basketball,
they begin redirecting them to other locations at the sports club to either wait or do
something else. Anthony creates an inequality to determine the day that the courts
will reach capacity of 2300 people. He writes the following inequality where 𝑑
represents the number of days and 𝑏 = the total number of basketball players.
3𝑑 + 10 ≤ 𝑏
 Show steps to solve the inequality.
 State the first day that Anthony will have to start redirecting people to other
locations in the sports club.
3. For customer service purposes, Anthony must predict how many Gatorades are
going to be drunk by the players. He gathered information to create a function.
After years of working at the sports club, Anthony knows that Gatorade
consumption goes at a constant rate. By day two there were 27 Gatorades drunk
and by day five there were 177 Gatorades drunk.
 Create a function to represent Gatorade consumption, g(d), as a function of
the number of days, d.
 Show all algebraic work to solve the function and state the number of
Gatorade consumed by day ten.
4. Anthony wants to estimate the numbers of people who play soccer now that they
have redone the soccer arena. Before the arena update was done, he recorded that
there were 6 teams of people playing soccer in their league. After a while,
Anthony recorded that it took 3 months to bring the soccer team number up to 30
teams. Anthony is given a function and a graph to represent this information
where m represents the number of months of growth and t(m) represents the total
number of soccer teams in the league.
𝑡(𝑚) = 27𝑚 + 6
Anthony is not sure which, if either representation is correct.
 Determine whether the function, graph, both or neither are correct. Justify your
conclusion using the data from the equation and graph.
 Describe how Anthony could use the function or graph to determine the number of
soccer teams in the league in month 12.
5. Pedro is the owner of the sports club. He wants to close the club two days a week, but
can’t decide which days would be the best to close. He creates a box plot representing
the number of people at the club each day for 30 days.
 Explain specifically all information that Pedro’s box plot provides in this context.
 Determine whether the box plot give Pedro enough information to make a reasonable
decision on which two days of the week he should close the sports club. Explain your
answer in regards to this type of graph.
