*Activity Directions*
Communicate Without Words- Give each student a plain sheet of paper,
then tell them to close their eyes and follow directions, no questions
allowed!
The directions are: “The first thing I want you to do is to fold your sheet of
paper in half. Now tear off the upper right hand corner. Fold it in half again
and tear off the upper left hand corner of the sheet. Fold it in half again.
Now tear off the lower right hand corner of the sheet.”
Complete the directions with your paper as well and pause in between steps
to give students time. After the instructions are complete, have students
open their eyes to see that everyone’s paper looks slightly different and
discuss why the directions were difficult to follow.
Grounders- Choose one person to be It, this person should count to 10 or
15 so all other players can get to a good starting point. When the person
who is It has finished counting, they have to walk around with their eyes
closed and periodically (about every 15 seconds) yell out ‘GROUNDERS’,
trying to call out when they hear someone on the ground. Players become It
by being tagged while they are on the ground.
Design the Future- Students can use various available art supplies to
create their own future, however they imagine it. They could also create a
particular object they imagine we will have in the future.
Bump- All players line up behind the foul line of a basketball court. The first
two players should each begin with a basketball. The first player tries to
shoot a basket, and the second tries to bump their basketball out of the air
with their own. If player 1 makes a basket, they pass the ball on to the third
person who immediately begins play with player 2 and player 1 returns to
the end of the line. If player 2 makes a basket first, player 1 is out for the
game. The game continues on through the line until there are just 2 players
left, who then play against each other for one winner!
Run with ItPopsicle Stick CatapultMaterials:
1. popsicle sticks
2. rubber bands
3. marshmallows or pom poms
4. plastic spoon
Directions:
1. Make a stack of popsicle sticks and rubber band them together on
each end.
2. Stack two popsicle sticks and rubber band them together on just one
end.
3. Pull the two popsicle sticks slightly apart and place the larger stack of
popsicle sticks in between them.
4. Rubber band the stack of popsicle sticks to just the upper popsicle
stick.
5. Rubber band a spoon to the upper popsicle stick.
6. Place a pom pom or marshmallow on the spoon and pull the spoon
down to launch it!
Chain Game- Have a brief discussion about what students do well and some
of their talents. Ask students to think of 5 (this number can vary based on
group size) things they do well, and then write them on paper strips. Create
a chain by linking the pieces together to demonstrate how the talented each
student is and how their talents can work together.
Candy MachineAirplane Olympics- Each student should make their own paper airplane,
then compete in a series of events including: aim (create a target for the
airplane to hit), distance (throw them from the same starting place and see
which goes the farthest), endurance (time which plane can stay in the air
the longest).
Question Jar- Create a set of premade questions, or have each student
write their own question on a small strip of paper. Place all the questions in
a jar, then choose one question at a time to read aloud, allowing each
student time to answer.
Create a Country- Students can work in small groups, pairs, or individually
to create their own country using any art supplies available. The leader or
group can choose the geographic features that should be included in each
country when it is complete.
