8 day oxford trauma recovery course 2017_18.indd

8 day Trauma Recovery Course
for schools, Oxford
It is suggested that three children
inevery classroom have a
diagnosable mental health disorder
(Daniel, 2014) and 1 in 10 children
are unhappy. (Children’s well being
overview, 2014.)
This is the time to become
equipped to know how to respond
to the 1 in 10 children who need
help to settle into school...
Research suggests that there has
been a rise in both the quantity
of children affected by traumatic
experiences and the severity of the
trauma experienced (Cafcass, 2009;
Donnelly, 2013). These experiences
are shown to impact on children’s
behaviour, learning and
self-regulation, and yet teachers
are currently not commonly or
consistently informed of this.
I have conducted research that
explores teachers’ perspectives on
the benefits, both for themselves
(reduced secondary trauma and
increased job satisfaction) and
for the children they teach, of a
short neuroscience-based training
programme, designed to inform
them about the impact of trauma
on a child and I found a significant
positive outcome.
