SESSION 4 SESSION THEME: Crossing the Line SESSION AIM

SESSION 4
SESSION THEME: Crossing the Line
SESSION AIM: Learners will look at Sustainability, Legacy and Longevity in relation to the Olympic & Paralympic Games, and their own TV
shows. They will look at Evolving their own TV show in order to embrace the Sustainability of it.
TOPIC/ACTIVITY

Recap- slides 2-9 (optional)
A recap of the original brief (important that learners keep referring back to it),
as well as aims and what’s up for grabs to incentivise the learners.
Re-cap on session 3 stressing that they have worked on issues surrounding
Equality and Diversity, as well as four targets they should have hit already (if
not then they can use some free research time to catch up during today’s
session).
Reflecting on Goals is a nice opportunity for the group to verbally encourage
one another if they found them to be particularly motivated last session, or
helpful, or hardworking etc.

TEAM DISCUSSION- slide 11
Teams discuss this session’s question ‘what TV show over the last year has
had a lasting impact on you?’ There are some prompt questions on the screen.
Encourage teams to draw out opinions from each team member. Perhaps you
could nominate a team leader in each team to do this.
Learners should share honest opinions, real experience, and reflect on how it
may affect or be relevant to their own lives.
(optional) Large group feedback. Ask for a couple of points raised from each
team.

Teams should write down what they know about London 2012, and are free to

DISCUSSION POINT- slide 13
Rio’s budget is £7.9billion to host the Olympics.
In contrast, its slum (favela) has 10,000 residents.
What are the potential positive and negative impacts of the Olympics being
hosted in Rio?

Pens and Paper
Teams are to write a list of pros and cons of a city (Rio specifically) hosting the
Olympic games.
Here, they can reference what they know about the London Legacy as citizens
of the last host nation.
The budget of £7.9billion may come as a surprise and may divide opinion
within the group. Teams should research what was spent on London 2012,
and also HOW that money was spent. Perhaps the breakdown will help them
to pick and choose what they deem as ‘worthwhile spending’ and any potential
missed opportunities.

LEGACY
Looking forward, teams are to research and comment on the following:
1.How is Rio committing to its Olympic Legacy?
2.How is it working to be sustainable?
3. How can they use the Olympics to boost their economy long after the
Games?
Teams should end this task with on overview as to what Rio’s Legacy
commitment is Post-Games. Perhaps have a large groups discussion to share
feedback and research.
 Making Your Show- slide 16
Teams to answer the following questions on the screen:
How long will your show take to film? If there is an assigned ‘scheduler’ they
would be best equipped to answer this, if that wasn’t an assigned role then as a
team consider what will be involved with the filming process. A live TV show takes
30 minutes to film, a soap could take a week to film one episode.
Will the making of your show harm animals? People? The environment?
There are obvious risk factors to consider for a show like ‘Jackass’, and even Blue
Peter jumps out of aeroplanes. Can they justify all of their choices?
If so, how can you avoid or counteract these risks?
What positive action can your production company take during filming to
affect the environment, As well as avoiding actively harming the environment,
how can you go out of your way to positively impact it.
Consider travel, food & drink, electricity, waste, make-up etc
E.g. each live audience ticket sold donates 30p to the National Trust? Or Olympic
Legacy/Slums in Rio etc or maybe one of your Social Media campaigns can raise
awareness or promote loving the environment? Or your Sit Com only uses makeup and cosmetics that have NOT been tested on animals. Or is there a way to
make all on-set food and drink packaging be recycled?

 Making Your Show… a success- slide 17
How will you measure the success of your show?
I.e. how will you know people enjoyed it?
Providing their pitch is a success and their show gets commissioned, and
Production Company would expect to measure success. Perhaps they can track
reactions after each episode? Or at the end of the series? Will it be a success if
there is a surge of 14-19 year old taking up sports? Or studying Language at ALevel? This will all depend on each teams aims and objectives.
 Making Your Show… Inspiring- slide 18
What sort of careers might this TV Show inspire in your viewers?
Teams to consider what they are promoting within their show? Is a lead character
an architect? Are the main interviews revolving around food and food technology?
Although Sport may well be a route of interest following watching their show, there
will be many more career aspirations too.
Teams to write a list of careers their show may point towards, both in an obvious
and more subtle way.
 Making Your Show… Go Further- slide 19
How can your show help the sustainability of the Olympics in the UK? ie to
make the impact of the Olympics & Paralympics last more than a few of
weeks.
Teams to make a list of ways that their show will inspire a sports specific legacy.
E.g. “ Our twitter account will remain live for a further year following the Olympics,
tweeting about athlete progress and achievements”
“We will sponsor a Park run every month”

2017- As an extension to the previous question, now imagine you have been
given a budget to roll out a follow up show. Teams to write a couple of
sentences on what that show would entail
2020- Your show was a great hit and Tokyo hosts want to commission you
again to help with the promotion of the Games during their hosting year. Write
a couple of sentences to describe what you would do with a new budget for
the next Olympics, drawing on the success of the 2016 show, and the name
you have created for yourselves. The show should remain true to your beliefs,
aims and objectives, but be relevant to a new city, new year and new Games.

Final words- slide 21
Moving on from session 4 teams will need to have completed and collated all
work. The next task will be for them to start on their pitch, deciding how they
will use their time and who will take responsibility for what. With this in mind
teams should be clear on what is left to complete, and how they will reach that
goal before the next session.
Teams should be clear on the expectations, and know they will have to build
up evidence of written work, as well as being assessed on how they work with
one another on the day.
One example is for teams to collate a folder of each session’s work which can
be added to with research outside of lesson. Or they can save everything to
one dropbox on the computers to put into a presentation/ppt later.
Teams to set goals for homework based on what work is outstanding.
Re-cap important dates- i.e. final pitch deadline.
