MARYLAND UNITED FC
Dear Members,
We hope everyone is doing well and has enjoyed your summer. We have had a very
good August with all of our teams working hard in camps, training, preseason
tournaments, and scrimmages. We are excited to watch the players and teams
progress throughout the Fall.
The purpose of this letter is to acknowledge and educate you on the USSoccer
Initiatives and how it will affect the landscape of youth soccer and the impact on our
club. The changes (see link below) relate to a shift to Birth Year (for U9 through U18
players) to group players and new rules for U9 to U12 (number of players, free zone to
encourage playing out of the back, and field size).
As a technical staff, we will be getting together in the next few weeks to discuss how
we move forward in greater detail and must also wait to receive information from the
member leagues we participate in on how they will adjust to the new policy.
[see the recent USSoccer Changes]
Based on the birth year age group matrix, we don't foresee major change within our
teams. We have always and will continue to make graduation year and ability level
determine the best team to play on. Based on the makeup of our current teams, it may
seem that more players will be considered "playing up". For example,we want the vast
majority of our U13-U18 players playing on a team that is in align with their graduation
year for the purpose of college recruitment (U15 = HS Freshman / U16 = HS
Sophomore / U17 = HS Junior / U18 = HS Senior). As in every team, there will always
be players who are "playing up" or playing down" based on the two most important
factors: ability level and physical maturity.
Once we have more information we will continue to share with you but there is no need
to panic. We have plenty of time to make solid decisions on what is best for each
individual player, team and program. Finally, as soon as we know more, we will pass on
individual player, team and program. Finally, as soon as we know more, we will pass on
all pertinent information to our members.
Thank you,
Maryland United FC Technical Staff

The goal of the Maryland United FC U8 Academy is to provide a fun, enthusiastic,
and positive learning experience through practice and competition for the player's first
year of select soccer. Ages 6, 7, 8 year olds. All players will learn the rules of the
game and focus on improving technical skills. Individual and team skill development
will be stressed before winning with an insight to long term development.
Players entering at the U8 level will participate in the game of soccer in a format that
is both fun better suited to their development.
The small-sided games (4v4) approach is the best way to introduce the game to U8
players. See the MD United Website for more info. Contact Coach Eric Anewalt at
[email protected] for info.
