Walpole Audience: All K-12 General and Special Education Professionals. Priority will be given to high-needs districts with large student populations, as well as to educators who did not attend prior years’ assistive technology institutes. Additional priority will be given to two-person teams from a public school district. Instructors: Jennifer Edge-Savage and Mike Marotta Dates &Times: The institute will include 5 full days (3 in summer, 2 in Fall) and 4 online sessions. Thursday, July 21, 2016 ~8:00 AM – 4:30 PM; Thursday & Friday, August 11 & 12, 2016 ~ 8:00 AM – 4:30PM; Friday, September 30, 2016 ~ 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM; Saturday, November 5, 2016 ~ 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM two-hour Online Sessions: July 12, July 26, September 21, October 26 (Times between 3:30 and 9:30pm) Location: TEC Professional Learning Center in E. Walpole and online Cost: FREE, funded by the Massachusetts DESE Earn: 67.5 PDPs To receive professional development points and/or credit, participants must attend ALL classes and complete all of the Institute’s requirements, including a final project. Grad. Credit: 3 credits from Worcester State University for an additional $300, payable at the first class. (Optional) Participant Selection Process: Preference will be given to 2-person teams from high-needs districts with large student populations. Priority will also be given to educators from districts that did NOT participate in a summer institute on assistive technology in the past two years. You will be notified of your acceptance into the program no later than June 21st. Course Description: The Institute will provide educators with an understanding of best practices in the field of Assistive technology (AT) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), as well as practical knowledge of the provision of Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM/AEM). Working collaboratively through hands-on activities, participants will leverage the power of available technologies and resources to enable all students, especially those with disabilities, to access the curriculum and improve their learning. The participant’s AT toolkit includes an iPad mini, a Chromebook, select apps, extensions, and online subscriptions. Social media tools will be used to develop an online Professional Learning Community statewide and beyond. About the Instructors: Jennifer Edge-Savage, MS, EdS, OTR/L is an Assistive Technology specialist, an Associate Professor of Practice at Simmons College, and the Director of the Graduate Program in Assistive Technology. She has been working in the field of AT for nearly 20 years. Mike Marotta is a RESNA Certified Assistive Technology Professional who has been providing direct services to individuals with all disabilities for over 25 years.
