SGWS 80th Anniversary - Safety Group · West Scotland

80TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
17TH NOVEMBER 2017
At the
RADISSON BLU HOTEL, GLASGOW
A UNIQUE EVENT TO CELEBRATE 80 YEARS
OF
SAFETY PROGRESS & ACHIEVEMENT
AT
A DISTINCTIVE VENUE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
80 YEARS OF HISTORY - A SAFETY PEDIGREE
In November 1937, executives from industrial firms
throughout Scotland met in the Stewarts and Lloyds
Ltd. Tollcross Tube Works, on Tollcross Road,
Glasgow.
The purpose of the meeting was to hear about the
Local Industrial Safety Groups that had been formed
in England with the object of discussing accidents at
work and to find means of preventing recurrence.
The membership of these groups was then confined
to subscribers of the national Safety First
Association’s Industrial Safety Service (now RoSPA).
In the early 50’s the local safety groups expanded throughout Scotland and by 1964 there
were 150 firms in the Glasgow Safety group and 400 firms associated with Safety Groups in
Scotland.
The introduction of the Health & Safety at Work Act
1974 revolutionised industry’s attitudes and helped
promote safety in the work place. In 1976 the
Lanarkshire group was incorporated into the Glasgow
group, which was then known as Strathclyde Health
& Safety Group. The Group celebrated its 50th
Anniversary in 1987 at a civic reception hosted by
Glasgow’s Lord Provost.
In 2001 the Group name was changed to Safety,
Health & Environmental Forum (Scotland) to
demonstrate the wider range of disciplines in which safety professionals were becoming
involved.
The group celebrated its 70th Anniversary on the 10th November 2007 with a Gala Dinner
held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow. Guests included Lord Cullen of Whitekirk, Stewart
Campbell from HSE, Hazel Harvey from IOSH, Roger Bibbings from RoSPA and guest speaker
Brian Sweeney, Chief Fire Officer, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.
In March 2015, the group re-branded to Safety Group · West Scotland to demonstrate closer
association with Safety Groups UK and the locale in which the group operates.
The group thanks you for your past support and hope you will join us in celebrating the past
80 years and will continue to work with us for the next 80 years.
