SCORE 24 Materials: - 4 dice per family/table - 1 score sheet for each player - Scrap paper as needed This is a 2 to 4 player game Grade 4- Directions: 1) Roll 4 dice in the center of the playing area. Each player must use the four numbers to try to make an equation that equals 24. No other numbers are allowed. All players share the numbers on the dice and go at the same time. 2) Players can use any math operation. Parentheses may be required. Players can also combine numbers to make two- and three- digit numbers. Here’s how it works: How far are you from 24? Roll: Examples: Player 1: 12 + 3 + 6 = 21 Points: 3 because (24 – 21) Player 2: 3 x 6 + 2 + 1 = 21 Points: 3 because (24 – 21) Player 3: 16 + 23 = 24 Points: 0 because (24 – 24) Player 4: 6 ÷ 3 x 12 = 24 Points: 0 because (24 – 24) Other examples: 132 ÷ 6 = 22 Points: 2 because (24 – 22) 62 x 1/3 = 20.666 ≈ 21* Points: 3 because (24 – 21) (6 + 3) x (2 + 1) = 27 Points: 3 because (27 – 24) Note: You have a reasonable amount of time to come up with your equation. Group members can agree on the exact time but it’s usually about 2-3 minutes per roll. 3) Record your own points after you share responses with group members. (Note: If you can’t figure anything out, just add the four numbers together.) 4) Roll the dice again. 5) After 10 rounds, the person with the lowest number of points wins. 6) Play again. * Round all decimal answers to the nearest whole number Game created by: D. Huntress Math standards that are practiced with this game: Solve problems involving multiplication and division of whole numbers, and multiplication of positive fractions with whole numbers. Demonstrate an understanding of how parentheses affect expressions involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication, and use that understanding to solve problems, e.g., 3 x (4 + 2) = 3 x 6.
