At the beginning of the story, Sarah refuses to get out of bed to go to her new school. Why does Sarah not want to go to school? I know I felt nervous on the first day of school but I was also excited to go. Will she eventually be excited to go to school? Further into the story, she imagines her new classroom where a paper airplane is flying and a boy is pulling his neighbor’s pigtails. This part was funny because I’ve never seen people behave like that in school! I think it’s funny how the author uses exaggerations to add humor to the character of Sarah. Finally, after some persuasion, Mr. Hartwell convinces Sarah to get out of bed, to have some toast, and to go to her new school to meet her new friends. When she arrives at school, the Principal cheerfully welcomes Sarah and takes her to her new classroom where she is introduced as “Mrs. Sarah Jane Hartwell,” the new teacher. The author does some foreshadowing to hint that Sarah may be an adult, but her face is always hidden until she is revealed as the new classroom teacher at the end of the story. Why does the author decide to hide Sarah’s identity until the end of the story? Maybe it’s because she wants the reader to really go back and think about the way Sarah behaves to realize that teachers and students can have the same feelings even if they are completely different people. This reminds me of my first day of school. It was in August of 2010. I was having the same nervous and anxious feelings like Mrs. Hartwell. I remember feeling my palms sweating and my heart racing as I anticipated for my new class to arrive. Other teachers I spoke to were experiencing the same feelings. Mrs. Hartwell’s feelings were completely normal for anyone beginning a near year at school. Name: ________________________ # ______
