Paper overview
Paramedic Theory and Management is a 15 point level 7 paper that is a compulsory paper from the
BHSC in Paramedicine programme. The primary focus of this paper is the pathophysiology of disease
and trauma associated with special populations of patients – these being the paediatric, obstetric, mental
health, the older patient and patients affected by toxidromes. The learning in this paper “rounds” out
teaching received so far within the degree that has focussed largely on the adult patient.

This paper is for people enrolled in either AK1013 Graduate Diploma in Health Science or AK3680
Bachelors of Health Science in Paramedicine who have satisfied the pre-requisites:
 There are four prerequisites which must be successfully completed these are: 576401, 576103,
527118 and 577101.

The anatomical and physiological nuances associated with paediatrics, obstetric and older
persons and the impact these have on patient care plans.
Epidemiology, presentation and management of abnormal obstetrics, medical and trauma
presentations of the paediatric and older person.

Teaching style, dates and location details
The course content delivery will be achieved through in classroom-based workshops, online interactive
study and self-directed learning. In semester 1 the paper is delivered at both the Christchurch and North
Shore campuses, in second semester the paper is available at the Christchurch campus only. The
paper is delivered using a combination of three short block courses, weekly lectures and online tasks.

Clinical Placement:
There is a total of 84 hours (7 shifts) of clinical placement attached to this paper. Two shifts will be in a
paediatric emergency department (or assessment unit). The remaining five shifts are elective and may
be a combination of clinical placements in: mental health, older persons unit, community health facility
(Alzheimer’s unit, rest home, hospice or birthing unit) and emergency ambulance.
How much time will I need to commit to the paper?
This is dependent on the speed at which you learn and work, but on average this paper typically involves
around 6-10 hours per week.
How much does this paper cost?
The tuition fees for Paramedic Theory and Management in 2012 was NZ$ 845 ($670 tuition and $175
clinical placement fees). Additional fees for study may include; a learner services levy, student
