One of the Biggest Games of the Year
By: Evonne Steward

September 18 was the day of the Homecoming game of 2015.
Everyone, especially the players, know that the Homecoming game is a huge
deal. More people show up to this game than any of the other Polo games.
It ended up being a tremendous event to watch because the Polo Panthers
beat the Princeton Tigers 26 to 8.
I interviewed running back, Ty Parker about that cold and rainy
Friday night. It’s obvious the Panthers did a fantastic job at the game, but I
asked Ty how he thought he played that night. He responded, “I think I did
alright, I know I ran the ball well, but I need to work on my tackling.” For
the players, I’d imagine that it’s an indescribable feeling walking out on that
field every Friday night, especially on homecoming night, the biggest night
of the season! Ty described this feeling as no other feeling in the world. He
said, “My adrenaline is pumping and I feel like I need to play my hardest
every single play because I never know when my last play is going to be.”
To continue, Polo may be doing pretty well this year but there’s always room
for improvement. It’s always good to better yourself or try your absolute
greatest at anything. When I asked Ty what he thought the team and himself
needed to improve on, he replied with, “Everything. The team needs to block
better and help each other out more. Also, I need to not lose my temper so
easy and stop going off on the refs and other players.”
Next, I interviewed Jamie McClard, a spectator in the stands. When
watching Polo play, everyone feels a different way. Some might feel proud
or some might feel ashamed. When asking Jamie how she felt watching the
boys on Homecoming night, she replied, “I felt proud of the team because
they are a great representation of our town. They play with pride, respect,
and honor. Our boys signify a true brotherhood that carries throughout our
town.” To continue, Princeton is a good team, but in comparison to them on
Homecoming night, we did do better and did something that they didn’t do.
Jamie stated, “I feel our team was more disciplined, determined, passionate,
and dedicated to the game plan and each other.” It may be easy to lose sight
of these characteristics but we need to remember to use them every game
that we have. After all, the Panthers are not only a football team, but a
family.

During the summer, Polo R-7 School was
renovated. New bathroom stalls and floors were
installed in the high school and a security system was
installed as well, for the safety of students and staff.
Along with the bathrooms and security system, a new
preschool is in the process of being built. The old
preschool was much too small for all the new coming
Panthers of the future. In the middle school, lockers
were installed and some floors were redone throughout
the school. The band room also had lockers installed so
band members could store their instruments. The new
renovations on the school have provided safety for
everyone and has made the school a better, more
comfortable place.
Many students, parents, and faculty members
are glad that the security system was installed. It
provides students and faculty with a safer work and
school environment. “I feel a lot safer now knowing that
random people can’t just walk in.” Jorgia Cory
exclaimed, “After hearing about all of the school
shootings that were happening, I realized that any
school could be in danger, so the security systems were
wonderful idea.” Soon it will be mandatory for all
schools in Missouri to have a security system.

Polo takes 2nd place in the Norborne
Softball Tournament
Polo participated in the Norborne Pirates Softball Classic
Tournament last Saturday, September 26, on a sunny fall
day. The Polo Lady Panthers played Marshall in their first pool
game. The Panthers beat Marshall behind both the pitching and
bat of Jenni Farmer, 9-3.
Farmer put herself in scoring position with three extra-base
hits. She doubled in the fifth inning and tripled in the
third and sixth innings.
Farmer put together a nice outing at the plate. Marshall
managed just 2 hits off of the Panthers varsity pitcher, who
allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out two during
her 4 2/3 innings she worked. Farmer got the win.
In the top of the first inning the Panthers grabbed an early
lead, 2-0. A single by Adrianna Staus plating Averie Heil started
off the inning. Freshman Kallie Heil plated Staus on an RBI
single to add another run. The game was back and forth heading
into the fifth inning.
The Panthers beat Marshall with 12 hits, including five extra
base hits. The Panthers scored 4 runs in the fifth inning on a
two-run single by Joely Hicks, an RBI double by Jenna Johnson
and an RBI single by Shelby Copeland.
The Panthers built on their lead scoring two more runs in the
sixth inning from a clutch error that scored Kallie Heil to open
the scoring in the frame. That was followed up by Hick's single
that scored Farmer.
Next in pool play Polo beat Hardin in a nail biter. Freshman
Teagan Logan brought home the go-ahead run to give Polo the
lead in the sixth inning. Polo held on to beat Hardin 4-2.
The top of the first Hardin took an early lead, 1-0. Polo answered
with a tie up run from scored on an error in the second
inning. Logan's clutch brought Polo to the winning side.
Averie Heil got the win at the plate. She allowed 2 runs over
six innings, struck out 7 batters, walked 2 and gave up 4 hits.
Polo played the Norborne Pirates in the Championship
game Saturday night. Norborne senior Madison McKinney
pitched a five inning shut out against Polo, allowed one hit (by
Kallie Heil), struck out 10 and walked only one in 5
innings. Freshman Shelby Copeland is the losing pitcher for
Polo. She lasted 1 2/3 innings, walked 4, struck out none, and
allowed 3 runs. Jenni Farmer came in for relief and allowed 3
earned runs. Heil finished the game and allowed no earned
runs. The Lady Panthers are now 11-8 on their season.

Finnish Comparison
Homecoming
By: Mercedes McNab
By: Stormy Farmer
Have you ever wondered about what other schools are
like? Schools from other countries? I think at least a couple
people do wonder, and compare even, about other schools, as
well as our school, differences. There are some school systems
that are interesting to learn about. The one I have learned
recently was Finland’s school system. One of the biggest
differences, I saw, between our school and theirs’ was that
they have to pay to go to school.
For some school systems, such as Finland’s, there are
no tests or comparisons between the students. It’s not needed,
it’s not even a law that it is required. The students understand
the material and try hard to memorize it all. 93% of all the
students in Finland’s school graduate. There is only one test,
the district wide exam, they are given the choice to take it.
Besides the test, or there lack of, the children also only
start school at the age of 7, if their parents pay for it. Instead
of having one recess, they have it after every lesson for 15
minutes. Another difference is that each class has multiple
teachers. This also helps the teachers, it gives them others to
design lesson plans and grade homework. Teachers are given
guidelines on what to do, but not how to get the point across.
Teachers teach for 4 hours, and spend the other 2 hours
assessing the kids. While we only learn Spanish here, they
have to learn English and one other language, between French
and German, I’m sure.
I interviewed Taylor Rash, a junior; Kaitlyn Moser, a
freshman; and Harley Sammons, another freshman. I asked
Kaitlyn if she would pay for schooling, and she said yes. I
asked Taylor if she wanted to work in a school, she, as well,
said yes. I asked Harley if having so many teachers would help
him improve his grades, if they were low, and his reply was
the most interesting. He said that “It depends on the teaching
style” and that there was the possibility that all the teachers
used the same teaching style. That was an excellent answer
because if that were the case and the student was struggling
and couldn’t understand their teaching methods, it would be
much harder to learn. Then their money would be wasted.
There are many differences between their school and
our own. Just as there are great differences between us does
not mean there are no similarities. We may not choice to come
to school, or pay, but we dedicate ourselves to trying to help
our school. Another similarity is we learn a foreign language
as well. We learn what our school teaches us, as do they. Our
teachers care for and help us. We show pride in what we learn
and do here as a Panther, and they do as well over in Finland.
Homecoming is a huge week for many people. It’s
always the most chaotic. There is people anxious about
homecoming King and Queen, classes rushing to get their
floats done, and kids deciding what they are going to wear
for the next spirit days. You also have those football players
who are pumped up about the football game. Homecoming
game is always a game we want to win, because who wants
to lose their homecoming game.
During homecoming week, STUCO schedules dress
up days. Our dress up days this year were, Tuesday was
Super Hero Pajama Day, Wednesday was Villain day,
Thursday was Super Hero Day and Friday was Spirit Day.
Another thing you can participate in for homecoming week
is working on your class float. That’s a big thing because a
lot of kids don’t show up or even pitch in for anything for
the float. You always have those same 5-10 kids who work
on it. Wednesday night was the Pep rally/Bonfire. You can
also get together with the sidewalk committees from each
class on Friday mornings to decorate your classes sidewalk.
The parade was at 2:15. 7 o’clock on Friday night was the
homecoming game.
Many Panthers love the thought of
homecoming week, just because it includes girls getting to
go shopping for a new dress or just anyone, being a part of
all the different activities going on for the week. The
homecoming dance is one of the most important parts about
homecoming. Girls love to dress up and dance. Abby
Walkers favorite part is, “The dance because you get to go
hangout with your friends and there isn’t many rules.” The
team the football players played was Princeton. We came
out on top against them last year and we dominated them
this year too. Everyone thought we had a good chance in
beating them this year. “I expecting us to win because if you
watch the game against them last year you would
understand,” Abby Walker. STUCO assigned dress up days
for Spirit Week. There are some dress up days that aren’t the
best and that kids don’t want to participate in. There are also
some days everyone loves and that are easy. The school
needs to have easier dress up days so there is more school
spirit and more kids can join along. The harder they are the
more people don’t want to dress, because no one want to
have to go and buy a new outfits for the week. “My favorite
spirit day is anything pajama days. It’s easy and you can pull
it right out of your closet,” Abby Walker said.
Homecoming game is always important game no
matter who the competitor is. What school wants to lose on
their field especially on homecoming? We played Princeton
last year on their home field and dominated them. Our boys
as a brotherhood went out on homecoming night and
defeated them again. Coach Erdman said, “Offensively, we
did fine on the front line blocking. Defensively, they did a
good job not letting them get deep passes on us.” Our
football boys are like brothers and will continue to fight to
win each game while having each other’s back. Like Coach
Erdman said, “Comradery.” Comradery will help the
football players defeat every team that steps up to the line.
Our football players have goals and those goals help them
succeed because they now where they are going.

Junior Averie Heil got it done at the plate for the
win and now has a 7-3 pitching record. Heil allowed 2
runs over 5 1/3 innings pitched. Heil faced 26 batters,
struck out 4, walked 4 and gave up five hits. Heil's last

Lady Panthers add two more wins to

The Polo Lady Panthers are 7-6 for their 2015
season. Polo traveled to Albany last Monday to take on the
Warriors. Averie Heil, a junior, powered the Lady Panthers at
the plate and in the circle.
Heil racked up 4 RBIs on one hit and homered (in the
park grand slam) in the sixth inning. Heil had an impressive
outing against the Albany offense. Heil held Albany hitters
(19 batters) over 5 innings to no earned runs, walked 4 and
struck out 7. Heil, the winning pitcher has a 5-3 record for the
season at the plate. Junior Jenni Farmer came in as her relief
and faced 11 batters, gave up 2 runs, 2 ER, 3 hits, had 2
strikeouts and 2 walks. Farmer is 1 and 1 this season.
Both teams remained scoreless until the 4th inning
when Polo scored one run. The 5th inning proved to be a good
one for Polo scoring 3 runs and the 6th inning was their best
scoring 5 runs. Albany grabbed their two runs in the 6th
inning. Polo beat the Warriors 9-2 in seven innings. Freshman
Kallie Heil went 2-2 and junior Joely Hicks went 2-3.
An early lead gave the Polo Lady Panthers a victory
over the Princeton Tigers 11-1, during their game last
Thursday, September 17, as they hosted the Tigers. Six runs
in the first three innings help put the Tigers away early.
An RBI single from freshman Teagan Logan in the
second inning supplied the early offense for the Lady
Panthers. Farmer racked up 2 RBIs on two singles in the 4th
and 6th innings. The Panthers increased their lead in the 3rd
inning with five runs. A clutch error scored Heil to open the
scoring in the frame. That was followed up by junior Joely
Hicks hitting a single to bring in Farmer.
The team tacked on another two runs in the fourth
inning as Heil singled and plated Julie Hurd. That was
followed up by Farmer's single to bring home Heil. The
Panthers drove in 3 more runs in the 6th inning.
Averie Heil was the winning pitcher. Heil racked up
10 strikeouts, allowed no earned runs, allowed 3 hits and one
walk over six innings. The losing pitcher was Goodin and
catcher was Allen.
It's school time again! After a summer of sleeping in
or doing things on your time, the alarm bell announcing the
first day of school can be a rude awakening. Whether you're
an anxious new student or a confident senior, heading back to
school signals a time of transition: new classes, new teachers,
new schedules, and a new social scene.
Everything was so much easier when we were
younger. Everyone told you where to go, what classes to take,
and how to finish your homework. Now we have to do it on
our own. “Always get your work done before the day its due.”
Jorgia Cory advises. These years are very important, so make
them count. This year is going to fly by just like every other
year.
You might have a hard time getting back into the flow
of school. Here are a few survival tips to make this year go
smoothly. Always get something to eat in the morning. When
people say “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”
is never truer when you’re going to school. Also, get enough
sleep every night. Studies show that kids needs at least 8-9
hours of sleep each night to feel rested. Sleep deprivation can
lead students to fall asleep in class and can make it hard to
concentrate.
Do more at school and you’ll have less at home. Take
advantage of those times during the school day when you’re
in class. You’ll be thankful later while you’re having fun
instead of being stuck at home doing homework or studying
for a test. Another way to survive school is to stay positive.
Having a good attitude will help you keep your spirits up when
life starts to fall apart around you. Stay calm and relaxed even
if you feel like nothing in your life is going right. You can lose
yourself and mess up in all the craziness.
School is a time to make friends and try new things,
but it’s also a place to learn skills like organization and
decision making that will come in handy for the rest of your
life.
Polo's Martin breaks MSHSAA record
for rushing yards in a game

Last Friday night the Polo Panthers traveled to
Maysville to take on the Wolverines. According to the
MSHSAA record books, junior Gunnar Martin had a record
breaking night on the field. Martin, a running back for Polo
racked up 559 yards and 7 TDs on 35 carries.
According to the records held at the MSHSAA office in
Columbia, Missouri, Martin's 559 yards in a single game is a
new state record, surpassing the 533 yards that Rayon
Simmons recorded in the books in 2007.
Maysville's Troy Powers also ran for 303 yards and had 4
TDs. Both teams had a combined 979 yards, with 581 coming
from Polo.
Other offensive leaders for Polo were senior Ty Parker with
4 carries, 12 yards and 2 TDs, junior Jake Leonard with 2 carries,
10 yards and 1 PAT, and senior Israel Alsbury with 8 carries and
14 yards. Martin ended the game with a 75 yard touchdown run
in the fourth quarter. Polo beat the Wolverines 66-60.
Passing for the Panthers was Leonard who went 1/1 for 56
yards to Parker and senior Brandon Hubbard who went 2/2 on
PAT attempts and JJ Zeigler and Drake Burton were the
receivers.
Defensive leaders for the Panthers: Leonard who ended with
12 tackles and Burton and Hubbard each with 9.
Head Coach Kyle Ross was proud of his team's effort and had
this to say after the game, "Wow, what an emotional game for
both teams. For the fans, I'm sure it was a great night for
football. For the Panthers, we just found a way to win. There
were plenty of mistakes made, which will have to be addressed
in order for us to become a better team each and every
down. Everyone contributed to this win. Our line play really
picked up after half time which showed. Brandon Hubbard and
Jake Leonard each completed big passes for us, which were
critical, and Gunnar Martin had a career day."

Jenna Johnson was crowned queen and Ty Parker was
announced King Friday, September 18, at the Bob Shearer
Stadium in Polo at halftime of the Friday night game between the
Polo Panthers and the Princeton Tigers. Other senior candidates
were: Stormy Farmer, escorted by Erik Johnson and Evonne
Steward escorted by Jason Thompson. The Polo Homecoming
Royalty also include juniors Joely Hicks and Jake Leonard,
sophomores Alayna Swetland and Drake Burton and freshman
royalty Mariah Clevenger and Chance Carr.
The Polo Panthers are having a winning season in
2015 and are ranked 1st in their district according to
MSHSAA. Polo is now 3-1 on their season after losing to
Lee Summit Christian Academy in their first home game 5632, they beat Lathrop at home 48-45 in week #2, took the
win from Gallatin 20-6 at Gallatin week #3 and last Friday
night they beat South Harrison on their field in a battle to
the end 50-44.
Both teams remained close throughout the game until Polo
pulled away from South Harrison in the third quarter and led
by as many as 22 points. South Harrison found their fight
inside and brought it to the Panthers closing the gap in the
score to within 6 points. Polo is a small, scrappy team that
never gives up and they proved that last Friday night as they
held off the Bulldogs and took home the team's third win of
the season.
Leading the Panthers offensively was junior Gunnar
Martin with 30 carries for 308 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1
PAT run. (This includes a 79 yard kick return TD by
Martin). Senior Israel Alsbury also ran the ball for the
Panthers and ended with 12 carries for 63 yards, 2
touchdowns and 2 PAT runs and senior Ty Parker had 10
carries for 25 yards.
The defensive leaders were: Jake Leonard with 14
tackles, Derek Faulkner with 12, Ty Parker with 10 and
Drake Burton with 9. Coach Kyle Ross had this to say after
his team dug deep and worked hard to bring home another
Panther win, "I am so very proud of efforts on the
night. That goes for our kids on the sidelines as well. It was
a great evening for HS football and all of our kids were in
tune all night. I really feel like emotionally this was our best
game. We demanded every ounce of pride and passion that
we could muster to be able to have a chance at beating an
extremely talented opponent. We made mistakes, which we
will continue to work to correct, however they were not
effort mistakes."
Polo wins Homecoming game 26-8

Heavy sheets of rain and large gusts of wind did
not dampen the Panthers desire to win their Homecoming
game last Friday night at Shearer Stadium. Mother Nature did
not make it easy for either team to compete at their best level,
but the Polo Panthers played hard as they were met with
unfavorable playing conditions that included strong winds,
cooler temperatures and sheets of rain that made it hard to see
at times. The Panthers won as the final horn sounded 26-8
over Princeton.
Polo offensive leaders were: junior Gunnar Martin ended
with 30 carries for 221 yards and 2 TDs (1 pat run), senior Ty
Parker had 12 carries for 85 yards and 2 TDs and senior Israel
Alsbury ended with 10 carries for 43 yards.
Polo defensive leaders were Parker with 7 tackles, junior
Jake Leonard 7 and Martin 6 with 1 TFL and 1 sack. Senior
Brandon Hubbard and Parker each had one
interception. Junior Zackery Phillips had 2 fumble
recoveries, while Leonard, senior Alex Jensen and senior
Michael Carver each had one fumble recovery.
At halftime the rain subsided and Polo crowned
seniors Ty Parker and Jenna Johnson as their 2015
Homecoming King and Queen. The senior class won the
"Most Class Spirit" award for their participation in the
sidewalk decorations, dressing up during Spirit Week and
their float receiving 1st place.
Head Coach Kyle Ross stated this after the game, "Mother
nature was not very cooperative on Friday night which led to
a pretty sloppy game for both teams. I was pleased with how
our defense made sure that they were in the correct alignment
for the majority of the night which really limited Princeton's
offense even more with the rain and wind as factors. It was
another good win and team effort for Polo on our
Homecoming week." Polo now has a 4-1 record on the
season.
Polo first inning burst enough to
top South Harrison 15-2
Polo traveled to Bethany to play the South Harrison
Bulldogs on Thursday, September 24. Polo beat South
Harrison 15-2 in five innings after an 11 run explosion in
the first inning.
Farmer brought the heat against South Harrison during
her outing as the relief. The Bulldogs managed just one
hit off of Farmer who allowed no earned runs,
walked none, and struck out two during her two innings of
work. Heil got the win and allowed two runs over three
innings. She struck out 4, walked 2 and surrendered 2
hits. Polo batters easily handled South Harrison pitching
as seven hitters combined for 11 hits, 11 RBIs, and 14 runs
scored (11 in the first inning). Heil is now 8-4 at the plate.
The Polo Lady Panthers tacked on 3 more runs in the
fifth inning. A single by Hicks ignited the offense
bringing home Heil and Farmer. That was followed by
freshman Teagan Logan's single, bringing home
Hicks. Logan went 2-4 batting with 1 RBI and 1 run
scored. Adriana Staus went 2-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs
scored.

Braymer 6-1. The fourth inning was huge for the Lady Panthers. Polo
scored five runs on two doubles, a groundout by senior Brittany Sheppard
and an RBI single by Kallie Heil.
The winning pitcher and catcher were Averie Heil and Jenna Johnson. Heil
is now 10-4 on her pitching for the season. She pitched 6 innings, faced 28
batters, gave up 1 run, had no earned runs, served up 4 hits, had no walks
and ended with 6 strikeouts. The loss got reocrded for Kelsi Stone who
gave up 3 hits and 6 runs in six innings and walked 2 and struck out 4. The
Bobcat catcher was Maggie Phillips.
Braymer scored its one and only run in the first inning on an error. Polo
